Job Description

Job Title: Lead Nurse/Registered Nurse (RN)- Specialty RN

Department: Imaging

Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm

Job Summary:

The Lead IR (RN) is responsible for assisting the physician and staff with the daily coordination of patient care and physician access. The RN functions as the liaison between patients, staff, and physicians

Essential Job functions:

  • Delivers direct patient care within the scope of licensure and in accordance with SMG policy.

  • Assumes accountability for the quality of care, which he/she has delivered including maintaining standard precautions.

  • Collects lab specimens according to departmental guidelines. Accurately labels specimens.

  • Prioritizes patient care by implementing physician orders and nursing procedures.

  • Documents appropriately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

  • Assures all patients are correctly identified prior to providing and/or documenting care.

  • Assures all patients are correctly identified prior to providing and/or documenting care.

  • Maintains efficient patient flow.

  • Employs appropriate and timely use of Tasking in EHR

  • Schedules appointments appropriately and accurately according to department guidelines.

  • Administers injections according to appropriate protocol. Documents injections accurately in EHR.

  • Appropriately demonstrates telephone triage protocols and document in EHR.

  • Effectively communicates problems, concerns, or issues to the Office Supervisor/Manager appropriately and promptly.

  • Ensures proper preparation for patient visit. Prepares pertinent information needed for patient visit.

  • Obtains vital signs: BP, temp, pulse, height & weight accurately and completely as required. Documents appropriately in EHR.

  • Reviews and updates medication list in EHR. Demonstrates understanding of prescription control and prescription refill procedures. Accurately and completely documents known allergies in EHR.

  • Appropriately enters orders and schedules appointments in the Practice Management System (PMS) and EHR.

  • Provides referrals and/or consult orders appropriately and in a timely manner in the PMS and EHR.

  • Appropriately adheres to universal safety precautions when administering medications and disposal of medical waste.

  • Maintains proficiency with department specific equipment, troubleshoots and reports malfunctions promptly.

  • Facilitates transition of care to UCC/Hospital

  • Checks and maintains logs for emergency equipment according to policy.

  • Assists in ordering and maintaining of all supplies as assigned.

  • Demonstrates flexibility with various work schedules.

  • Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned.

  • Creates an environment where persons feel welcome, respected, and included. Is courteous and positive.

  • Willingly assists patients/visitors/Associates as needed. Makes self-accessible to internal as well as external customers.

  • Takes the initiative to resolve customer service patient related issues. Is proactive versus reactive.

  • Uses resources wisely. Participates in cost control by minimizing the waste of supplies, and handling equipment carefully to prevent breakage. Identifies cost saving opportunities and supports Holy Cross Green Initiative.

  • Complies with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, and standards such as Attendance, Safety/Disaster policies, Universal Precautions, Infection Control, Safety Reporting, Code of Conduct.

  • Keeps others informed on status of projects, processes, and issues.

  • Participates in the interviewing process of prospective staff and provides input to the Director.

  • Ensures that staff utilize the nursing process in meeting patient care standards.

  • Utilizes effective delegation skills in assigning duties to other staff and Senior Nurses.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the provision of nursing care.

  • Insures appropriate patient preparation as well as completion of chart, prior to surgery, special procedure, transfer or discharge.

  • Assumes primary nurse, team leader, or patient care responsibilities as necessary.

  • Promotes teamwork and collegial relationships with, and among staff.

  • Makes initial assessment, and determines appropriate nursing needs of assigned patients, as evidenced by appropriate documentation.

  • Performs initial and ongoing assessment on all assigned patients, including a review of systems, as evidenced by appropriate documentation.

  • Functions in first-line management/clinical leadership role in coordinating patient care activities on the nursing unit.

  • Participation in huddles

  • Provides for direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the patient and significant others.

  • Is knowledgeable of current nursing practices and ensures compliance to the hospital's policies and procedures.

  • Serves as a coordinator of the multi-disciplinary approach to patient s care to include care planning, patient teaching, and discharge planning.

  • Assists with patient/family education as needed.

  • Ensures appropriate staffing and coverage for unanticipated needs, within the guidelines of the department.

  • Demonstrates effective and respectful communications with patients, families, or employees. Expresses self clearly and effectively in oral and written communications (including emails and telephone conversations).

  • Independently maintains required competencies and skills taking initiative for self-development and growth.

  • Willingly cross-trains intra departmentally to meet personal and organizational needs as appropriate.

  • Adheres to Patient Safety Practices as it applies to the department.

General Job functions:

  • Responsible for maintenance of staff and provider schedules in departmental scheduling tool. Work with Office Supervisor/Clinical Coordinator RN to provide adequate staff coverage.

  • Responsible for oversight of medical and office supplies and ordering of supplies.

  • Monitor employee performance of staff assigned to office. Discuss concerns and issues with Office Supervisor/Clinical Coordinator/Clinical Practice Manager.

  • Responsible for addressing and resolving patient complaints/issues. Communicate issues and resolution to Providers, Office Supervisor/Clinical Coordinator/Clinical Practice Manager. Bring concerns expressed by providers to Office Supervisor/Clinical Practice Manager.

  • Notify Office Supervisor/Clinical Coordinator/Clinical Practice Manager of any potential health and safety hazards in the office. Responsible to place and follow through on Facilities/IT work orders related to the office setting.

  • Other job duties as required.

Education, Certification, Computer and Training Requirements:

  • Associate degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • New Jersey State Nursing License and BLS certification required.

  • 3+ years' experience preferred with a Radiology and or IR setting.

  • Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Ability to perform diverse work assignments with time limitations with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Ability to use problem solving, critical thinking and priority setting skills required.

  • Experience with Standard Office Equipment (Phone, Fax, Copy Machine, Scanner, Email/Voice Mail) preferred.

  • Experience with Patient care equipment required.

  • Experience with EHR, Practice Management System and Departmental/Ancillary Systems preferred.

Travel: Ability to commute to satellite offices as needed.
