The Lead Medical Assistant works cooperatively with primary care team and support staff to provide direct patient care. May float to other Southwest Medical Associates (SMA) clinics. Work cohesively with front office to ensure smooth patient flow, prescription pick up, waiting room management, and adherence to Southwest Medical Associates (SMA) policy 180-2, Daily Collection of Information and Monies for Medical Coverage, Cash Control & Preparation of Clinical Area Bank Deposit, Procedures. Resolves moderately complex issues and defers appropriately to supervision. Ensures appropriate standards of care are followed and in compliance with all state and federal regulations, standards of practice, corporate policies, and procedures.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct patient care with exemplary customer service to internal and external customers. Duties included but not limited to Standard Rooming; electronic record charting(vital signs, chief complaint, medications review, subjective/objective outcome, messages and provider recommendations), ancillary testing(pulmonary function testing, EKG, waive testing, DPN, BMD, Ear lavage), patient ancillary visits (injections, blood pressure, pulmonary function test, EKG); patient education; follow up in the office or by telephone with patients for medical management of health condition

  • Compliance with front office functions to include patient check in/out process (SMA 180-2), cash handling, scheduling, and entering appointments, demographics, empanelment, and insurance information in APM

  • Assists, complete and process phone calls, answers Genesys patient calls and documents patient messages. Documents all calls and actions taken

  • Coordination of patient care under the guidance of the primary care provider (visit closure, hospital transfer, blood transfusion, urgent or emergent referral), act as liaison in person or by telephone for health plan, case management activities, home health and disease management

  • Function as a Team expert for Automated Referral, TouchWorks, Hospital Records retrieval, Nevada Prescription Monitoring Program and CORE. Project lead for LEAN/ACE directives, Huddle goals or special project initiative (ECC lead)

  • Ensure staff and clinical operations meet audit and regulatory compliance, assist in the capture and analysis of data related to department, quality measures, policies and procedures, state, and federal regulations, and/or standards of care

  • Maintain, facilitate, and promote primary care department protocols, processes, policies, and standards to include but not limited to the following: Standard Rooming, 5S Exam rooms, Daily Huddles, New and Existing patient management, Medication Refills, Pathology Specimens, Radiology Procedures, and other Specialty specific protocols as signed by department head or designee

  • Maintain back-office patient flow in collaboration with providers and support staff in absence of on-site management or LPN

  • Train and teach peers on current and new processes, workflows, and act as a super user in all medical systems (Touchworks, referrals, scheduling, etc.)

  • Act as a team lead, coordinating the work and training of others, but not a supervisor

  • Works autonomously within the established procedures and practices

  • Can be a preceptor or focused on training new entry medical assistants and MA externs

  • Anticipates pattern and links; looks beyond the immediate problem to the wider implications

  • Generates new and innovative solutions to complex problems

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Completion of a Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant program and/or relevant experience

  • 3+ years experience within OptumCare as a Medical Assistant/Sr MA or experience in the military as a Medical Assistant/EMT/Medic

  • Ability to perform complex Medical Assistant tasks including tests and treatments within the clinical scope

  • Proven solid organizational and independent work skills

  • Proficient basic computer skills i.e., Microsoft products (Excel, Word, Outlook)

  • Expert with computer based medical record

  • Proven communication skills, excellent phone etiquette and customer service skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BLS certification or must be able to complete certification within 30 days of hire

Working Conditions: Normal clinic environment. Ability to pass FIT testing and wear N95/N99 OSHA protective mask as deemed by OptumCare NV in the course of work at the clinic. Moderate to heavy phone and computer usage. May float to other Southwest Medical (SMA) or Optum locations

Colorado Residents Only: The hourly range for Colorado residents is $19.47 to $38.08 per hour.
