POSITION INFORMATION: Under minimal supervision of a physician or other medical personnel, performs patient care functions such as physician assistance, patient placement, testing, information gathering, nursing duties, chaperoning, supply maintenance, scheduling, conflict resolution, and supervises other medical assistants. May coordinate schedules of patients in an outpatient clinic and provide clerical assistance toward the smooth operation of the facility.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Physician Assistance. Assists physician or other medical personnel in the examination process as required or necessary. Performs order entry to electronic medical records, i.e., prescription refills, lab orders, radiology orders, etc.

  • Patient Placement. Places patients in exam rooms. Drapes and positions patients for appropriate exams or procedures. Assists in restraining or controlling patients (infants, children, geriatrics, etc.).

  • Test Performance. Performs routine tests on patients such as audiograms, vision, spirometer, EKG, rapid strep, urinalysis, and urine pregnancy tests. Assists with cardiovascular stress tests, fetal non-stress tests, and OB ultrasounds.

  • Information Gathering. Obtains and records vital signs including body temperature, height, weight, and blood pressure. Takes and documents complaints and patient histories including allergies, immunization histories, etc. Maintains patient confidentiality. Receives and returns telephone calls from or to patients and pharmacies. Obtains authorizations and referrals.

  • Nursing. Performs various nursing duties such as suture removal, casting and steristrip applications, administration of injections, venipunctures, breathing treatments, ultrasound therapy, and hydroculator therapy. Assists with both surgical and non-surgical procedures.

  • Chaperoning. Chaperones examinations and patients.

  • Supply Maintenance. Ensures exam rooms are stocked, inventory is taken, supplies are ordered, and instruments and/or equipment are sterilized.

  • Scheduling. Makes scheduling arrangements with other healthcare professionals and facilities.

  • Conflict Resolution. Acts as a lead employee to resolve problems or conflicts such as work performance, training, patient care issues, etc.

  • Supervision. Supervises, instructs, and reviews other Medical Assistants to ensure accuracy and tasks are performed in a timely manner. Works closely with Clinic Manager and/or Clinic Nurse Manager to assist with screening and interviewing candidates, conducting performance appraisals, providing input of promotions and/or pay increases, training, and approving employee's time off.

  • As Needed. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Education: High school diploma or GED and a qualified ABR-OE (Assessment Based Recognition in Order Entry) or graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant Program.

Experience: 36 months experience in patient care as a Medical Assistant or 36 months performing electronic order entry as a qualified ABR-OE.

Certifications/ Licenses: CPR Certification and Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant or qualified ABR-OE

POSITION INFORMATION: Provides diabetes education for a study, department, or clinic, collaborates with other professionals, develops educational educational material, coordinates visits, and maintains records. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: * Diabetes Education. Educates individuals with type-2 diabetes on the pathophysiology of diabetes, the psychological issues of having the disease, oral and injectable diabetic medications, and sick day management. Teaches families how to monitor blood sugars, and manage blood sugars with food and exercise. * Collaboration. Actively participates on the diabetes study team. Collaborates with study staff in meeting study objectives as outlined by the study protocol. Attends medical visits with study physician and completes study related associated paperwork. * Material Development. Develops educational materials such as the Diabetes Education Manual, workbooks, blood glucose meters and logbooks, and diabetes questionnaires to assess mastery of learned materials. May present material through lecture or with the use of multimedia video. Works with study participants in completing the education materials. * Visit Coordination. Coordinates patient visits and the associated work with the diabetes medical staff at the University site. Assists in setting schedules for return visits. Answers telephone inquiries. * Record Maintenance. Maintains study participant records according to study guidelines. * As Needed. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position. Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Nutritional Science, Public Health or other advanced healthcare degree Experience: 24 months experience as a healthcare educator or experience in community health Certifications/ Licenses: Selected candidate must be willing to obtain Certified Diabetes Educator certification Preferred: * Dietitian or Dietitian Nutritionist holding active resignation with the Commission on Dietetic Registration * Experience with Pediatrics and with Native American communities.
