We have an exciting opportunity available within our Mechanical Engineering Team working within the Photonics Group. We are looking for an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer with structural and thermal design and analysis of composite and metallic assemblies located in Rancho Bernardo, CA.


  • Supports engineering and program staff in the analysis, investigation and resolution of engineering problems. Works independently with little supervision.

  • Will work on aerospace systems, high energy lasers, electro-optical systems and other various systems.

  • Create system specifications, systems engineering, and requirements development.

  • Perform optical mounting analyses and jitter analyses

  • Ability to perform and lead mechanical designs including: structural analysis, thermal analysis, 3D CAD and engineering drawings.

  • Experience with the design, analysis, build and test of advanced airborne hardware utilizing composite materials.

  • Determines technical objectives and develop innovative, practical solutions to advanced technical engineering problems.

  • Addresses complex and difficult technical issues requiring highly creative approaches, drawing on advanced engineering concepts.

  • Ability to work with and lead multidisciplinary teams.

  • Hands on work environment and high level of interaction with system components. Oversee prototype builds and implement lessons learned into design.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; fifteen or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, thirteen or more years of experience with a masters degree, or ten or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.

  • Experience with random vibration analysis, vibration isolation techniques, FEM structural and thermal analysis is required.

  • Prior experience in military products and airborne systems and the ability to lead development through design, analysis, and testing from concept development through deployment is desired.

  • Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.

  • Candidate must have experience with mechanical design and analysis.

  • Exposure to laser laboratory environment preferred, including materials characterization, testing, and failure analysis.

  • Previous experience with optical system, flight systems, or military systems is desired.

  • Experience with CAD, FEA and CFD software such as Pro-E/Creo, Solidworks, ANSYS, NASTRAN is required.

  • An active DoD Secret Security Clearance is required, a Top Secret is preferred.

VIEW JOBS 3/17/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-06-15T00:00 Position Summary Creates product designs and documentation for new and existing products by providing accurate layouts, 3D models, drawings, bill of materials (BOM), and other documentation to fully define product for manufacture. Work will include projects with moderate scope and/or complexity and minimal supervision from engineers and supervisor. Key Role Responsibilities * Independently prepares comprehensive product layouts on project design aspects * Designs components and assemblies using 3D CAD system. * Directs and assists with the build of components and assemblies for prototypes and pilot builds * Performs engineering tasks per Delivery and Quality objectives defined by the E2E cell * Participates in the 3D process, A3's, 3P & 2P events * Participates in Lean activities as requested * Assists in the development of engineering, drafting and release standards * Performs tolerance stack analysis of complex assemblies and drawings prior to release of documentation * Participates in the product development process, including design brainstorming and voice of customer activity * Initiates/prepares Engineering Change Order (ECO) documentation, including the development of BOM's * Performs research and investigation to obtain missing information to ensure all specifications are correctly presented on documentation * Performs required calculations to ensure all dimensions, tolerances and other specifications are correct as represented with minimal checking required * Provides technical expertise in the use of required tools such as SolidWorks and Enovia * Evaluates and estimates incoming engineering work and assigns to Designer Associates as required * Provides leadership and limited work direction and technical support to Designer Associates * Assumes documentation leadership role with some degree of supervision * Manages both small and some parts of large scale projects independently * May be required to perform additional duties as assigned Qualifications and Experience * Two year technical degree preferably in drafting, design, electronics or architecture * Minimum of 6+ years mechanical, electrical or refrigeration experience in drafting/design required * Advanced knowledge of drafting standards and manufacturing processes * Advanced knowledge of Product Data Management, ECO and Product Development Processes * Advanced knowledge/aptitude in mechanical, electrical or refrigeration for designing, assisting and directing the build of components and assemblies * Advanced skills using SolidWorks, Enovia and JD Edwards * Skills to independently identify and define materials and information needed for a project * Skills to assemble engineered design packages * Demonstrated skills in attention to detail and accuracy * Demonstrated skill in using personal computers including Microsoft Office etc. * Ability to utilize strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interface with people across multiple functional areas * Ability to effectively organize and plan workload and work in a self-directed manner * Ability to build and maintain effective work relationships across functional areas * Ability to review projects performed by others in the work group for conformity to standards and quality assurance * Ability to lead cross functional team efforts related to technical information * Ability to adapt to rapidly changing business circumstances and have the ability to thrive in a constantly changing business environment nVent is an Equal Opportunity Employer #LI-MB1 nVent is a $2.1 billion, high-performance electrical company with a dedicated team of 9,000 people and trusted brands such as CADDY, ERICO, HOFFMAN, RAYCHEM, SCHROFF and TRACER.
