Position Summary

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

To lead, oversee and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for performing skilled vehicle maintenance work involved in diagnosing, repairing and maintaining a variety of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems on light and heavy gasoline and diesel power driven vehicles and equipment; to oversee and participate in overhauling, repairing and adjusting engines, transmissions and related vehicle systems; and to oversee and participate in performing preventivemaintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment.

This is the advanced journey level class in the Mechanic series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series including providing lead supervision over less experienced mechanics. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Lead, plan, train, review, and participate the work of staff responsible for performing skilled vehicle maintenance work involved in troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining a variety of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems on light and heavy gasoline and diesel power driven vehicles and equipment.

  • Train assigned employees in their areas of work including proper vehicle maintenance work and safety methods, procedures and techniques.

  • Supervise the use, care and operation of a variety of mechanical repair equipment including machine lathe, grinders, sanders, and welding equipment.

  • Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.

  • Oversee and participate in the overhauling, repairing, and adjusting engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, hydraulic equipment, generators, distributors and pumps; fit and adjust bearings; install axles and wheels.

  • Oversee and participate in the diagnosing, maintaining and repairing electrical system components, ignition systems, alternators, starters and batteries.

  • Oversee and participate in diagnosing and repairing front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears and chain drives.

  • Oversee and participate in replacing or repairing faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts and equipment.

  • Oversee and participate in engine tune ups by replacing ignition parts, reconditioning and adjusting carburetors and fuel injection systems; repair and maintain emission control systems, such as diesel particulate filters, and selective catalytic reduction systems.

  • Oversee and participate in repairing, adjusting and replacing brake systems including wheel cylinders, masters cylinders, disc pads, machine drums and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes.

  • Oversee and participate in welding, fabricating and assembling parts and equipment for City automotive and heavy equipment; fabricate and modify tools as needed.

  • Oversee and participate in the maintenance and repair of shop equipment; clean and maintain assigned work area; dispose of hazardous materials according to established procedures.

  • Oversee and participate in the City's preventive maintenance program and schedule vehicles for preventive maintenance.

  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

  • Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required; distribute parts as necessary.

  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

Graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented by specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment.

Experience:

At least three years of increasingly responsible automotive and equipment maintenance and repair experience.

License or Certificate:

A safe driving record and a valid State of California unrestricted Class "B" license with a tanker and air brake endorsement is required.

At time of hire, candidates must possess and maintain a valid A.S.E. Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technician certificate OR successfully obtained a minimum of three (3) of the following A.S.E. certifications for medium to heavy-duty trucks:

  • T1 - Gasoline Engines
  • T2 - Diesel Engines
  • T3 - Drive Train
  • T4 - Brakes
  • T5 - Suspension & Steering
  • T6 - Electrical/Electronics Systems
  • T7 - Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  • T8 - Preventive Maintenance Inspection

Examination Process

Interested applicants must submit an online application, a cover letter, and a completed supplemental questionnaire by the closing deadline of 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2024.Unless specifically stated otherwise in this announcement, all requirements must be met at the time of application, and all required licenses and certificates must be current and valid. Candidates whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the City will be invited to participate in the examination process for this position. The examination process may consist of any or all of the following components: written test, practical skills evaluation, and an appraisal interview. Eligible candidates will be notified when testing dates have been established.

Special Requirements:

Employees in this position are subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing as required by the Department of Transportation. The applicant selected will be given a conditional offer of employment pending the outcome of a post-offer physical and drug screen. Additionally, applicants will be required to provide written authorization allowing the City to contact previous employers to determine if the applicant has previously tested positive for drugs or alcohol, or refused to submit for testing.
