LEAD LIFEGUARD

JOB TITLE: LEAD LIFEGUARD (SEASONAL)

DEPARTMENT: PARKS & RECREATION

MUST MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Must be 16 years of age or older.

Previous Lifeguard experience. Must be available for work on weekends and holidays. Must possess a valid license or a picture I.D. and an original Social Security card at the time of interview. May be required to work up to 25 hours per week-days and times may vary.

NOTICE: If hired as a lifeguard, the applicant must pay for and attend a lifeguard training class ($60.00) and purchase a lifeguard uniform ($20.00). To be employed by Clayton County, potential employee must pass and receive the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. Preference will be given to applicants who already hold this certification.

NATURE OF WORK: Work involves performing duties requiring independence, accountability, and responsibility.

Lifeguards will also be responsible for testing water levels and safety equipment on a daily basis. Employment traditionally consists of up to 5 months of seasonal work.

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: Perform water rescues as prescribed by the American National Red Cross Training Program; perform first aid/CPR/AED skills as necessary or as required by supervisor; be responsible for the overall safety of visitors using the facilities; be responsible for the conduct and performance of the lifeguards; make certain all necessary lifeguards are in their positions before allowing swimmers to enter the lake; schedule any or all facility staff when required; perform in-service training, physical conditioning drills, rescues, and emergency procedure drills; complete neat and concise written reports as needed to include, but not limited to, incident reports, training reports, and a daily activity log.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to successfully complete the American National Red Cross Lifeguard Training Program which includes water rescue skills, First Aid, CPR for infant, child, adult and two-rescuer, and Oxygen Administration using a bag-valve-mask.

A ability to swim 300 yards, continuously, using the following strokes: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick, 100 yards breast stroke and 100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke or a combination of both. You must also be able to swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim back 20 yards with object on your chest and both hands on the object (Must complete within 1 minute 40 seconds and cannot use swim goggles); You must also be able to tread water without using your hands for two minutes (hands must be placed under armpits); perform all required skills with 100% accuracy and pass a written test with a score of at least 80%; ability to supervise others and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees and supervisors; deal courteously and firmly with the public; demonstrate good judgement, tact, and courtesy; and maintain good physical health; have excellent people skills.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: Selection will be made from a register of eligible applicants that may be established by education, work experience, test score, personal interview, credit check, criminal history, driving history (copy of driver's license may be required), drug screen, and/or physical examination.
