Job Description Summary

The GEHC Maternal Infant Care Business is shaping the future of medical technology in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Labor and Delivery care areas of hospitals. We are looking for a Lead Human Factors/Usability Engineer to join the Maternal Infant Care R&D team.

Join a dynamic team dedicated to sending Moms and Babies home healthy. As a Lead Human Factors Engineer, you will be a core member of the Maternal Infant Care Program teams and will lead usability activities for new and existing products by defining usability strategies, planning tasks aligned with these strategies and executing usability activities based on user-centered design principles and customer needs.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Observe the patterns of use and the use environment, analyze tasks, map workflows, interview users, organize focus groups, gather user requirements, create environment and user profiles, and report research observations.

  • Organize design-driven/concept creation workshops, create new concepts, brainstorm new user interface ideas and evaluate design concepts and user interface prototypes with end-users, report results to product development team members.

  • Work closely with users, marketing, clinical applications, service, and field team members to understand key usability needs.

  • Represent Usability Engineering on cross-functional program teams to manage and provide advice on schedules, deliverables, dependencies, and issues.

  • Provide input during design phase for user interfaces, contribute to user requirement specifications and risk mitigations.

  • Develop and document usability evaluation plans, protocols, reports, task analysis, risk analysis and use analysis reports. Provide usability assessments for features, design change and complaint investigations.

  • Develop methods to test and validate user requirement specifications and their effects on clinical application and user workflows.

  • Participate in technical design reviews, technical discussions, and risk mitigations with focus on evaluation of design of user workflows, interactions, and experiences based on user-centered design principles and user needs.

  • Plan, coordinate and execute formative and summative usability studies for new feature development or changes to the product design. Summarize the usability results per the internal work instructions and report results to program members.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards related to human factors engineering. Prepare usability reports for product submissions to regulatory agencies, participate in regulatory audits as usability expert.

  • Integrate usability into the organization's roadmap. Engage with internal and external usability experts & capture industry trends and best practices.

  • Manage usability lab and equipment to ensure that it remains an accurate use environment for usability studies.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives within the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in Engineering, Science, human factors engineering, cognitive psychology, user experience, industrial design or related field

  • Minimum of 4 years with experience in Engineering/Technology and Human Factors Engineering, or equivalent technical role

  • Experience working in cross-functional teams, strong influential and communication skills

  • Demonstrated experience with designing and conduct studies including: moderating, observing, and performing root cause analysis for use errors.

Desired Characteristics

  • Master's degree or equivalent degree in Engineering, Science, human factors engineering, cognitive psychology, user experience, industrial design or related field

  • 5+ years in Healthcare, Medical Device or other regulated industry with experience in product development and human factors

  • Experience with applying user-centered design principles and methodologies to software and hardware in a business environment

  • Experience with managing projects in order to meet safety, quality, performance, schedule, and budget goals

  • Experience working directly with customers or other end users in medical healthcare/device field

  • Demonstrated ability to present new ideas to customers using sketches and mock-ups

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to work harmoniously within globally located teams

  • Basic understanding of system, electrical, and mechanical design, as well as software integration

  • Practical experience applying standards to design and development such as IEC 62366-1, IEC 60601-1-6, ISO 14971, MDR, HE75, and FDA guidance.
