Responsibilities


Interprets complex silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber

.

Develops and drafts timber cruise plans.

Lays out timber sale boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments and other instruction, considering factors such as transportation system, topography, fuels management, silvicultural objectives, wildlife needs, stream protection and other related resource considerations.

Applies instructions issued in a cruise plan. Provides field instruction to apprentice cruisers in fundamental timber measuring practices, cruise methods, and techniques.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Selectee will be responsible for tax obligations related to payments for moving expenses (2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Public Law 115-97). Questions should be directed to the Travel Help Desk, , Option 1, or email .

The incumbent will be guaranteed 18 pay periods of full-time work. However, there may be a possibility to work more. You will then be placed in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

The incumbent serves as the team leader of a small crew consisting temporary and seasonal employees up to the GS-6 level who perform timber sale preparation duties including, timber marking, timber cruising, and sale layout as part of the Ranger Districts timber program.

Qualifications


Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement as defined below

For the GS-05 eligibility level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level;

OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or courses that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable);

OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Examples of specialized experience are: Established guidelines to apply silviculture prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber; assisted with the measurement and recording of forestry data, including tree measurements and estimated the defects and quality of timber.

For the GS-6 level:Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5);

Examples of specialized experience are : conducted timber cruise plan projects as directed; obtained and recorded tree measurements; applyied silviculture prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber; assessed the quality and determined the defects of harvest timber; and used timber cruise computer programs to prepare and process cruise data.

For the GS-7 level:Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6);

Examples of specialized experience are: conducted timber cruises and surveys within varying stand conditions to locate and estimate timber quantity; estimated volume, defect, and quality of timber. Selected and marked trees for harvest, lay out of timber sale boundaries; summarized cruise and marking data for inclusion in reports describing timber quantity, resources, topographic features and timber marking guidelines; prepared topographic maps; and independently completed timber sale appraisals and contracts.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Work Experience: Your resume must clearly document the following for each block of work experience; the beginning day, month and year the work assignment started and ended; the hours worked per week; position title, and series and grade if applicable; and description of duties performed. This information must be provided for each permanent, temporary or seasonal appointment/work assignment or volunteer work and should be clearly documented as a separate block of time.

Incomplete, inaccurate or conflicting work history may not be credited for qualifications purposes. This can result in an applicant not being considered for the position.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
