Summary
The Lead Mechanic plans, supervises and performs work in connection with major repairs to automotive and/or heavy equipment including major engine overhauls, tune-ups, relining and adjusting brakes, wheel aligning, transmission and differential replacement and repair, electrical replacement and repair, and minor body repair; inspects equipment and implements corrective actions when necessary; inspect the work of others; ensures adequate inventory of spare parts are on hand.
Essential Duties
Adheres to all company policies and/or federal, state, and local regulations including OSHA/MSHA and DOT
Develops and implements procedures and work instructions
Motivates and mentors mechanics at various experience levels
Diagnoses and repair issues in diesel/gas engines
Diagnoses and repair issues with hydraulics, brakes, transmission, steering, and other systems
Schedules and performs preventative maintenance and annual inspections
Resolves safety defects promptly; takes vehicles out of service as needed
Conducts final inspection of repairs by others
Tracks vehicle registration and insurance
Ensures all service work is documented
Prepares work orders
Takes weekly inventory of parts and other essential shop items; replenishes stock as needed
Maintains a clean and safe workplace; assists with general housekeeping throughout premises
Other projects and duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications
High school diploma or GED certificate
Diesel technician or mechanic degree a plus
3 years of relevant experience during past 5 years, including diesel
1 year of supervisory experience; and demonstrated leadership abilities
Valid driver's license, CDL holder preferred
Ability to pass DOT exam
Excellent mechanical skills
Math & computer skills
Self-motivated, team player
Some welding experience a plus
Physical Requirements:
Frequently required to walk, sit, stand, balance, stoop, bend, push, pull, lift, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb stairs/ladders and use of hands
Must have vision, hearing, and ability to talk
Exposure to hot/cold temperatures
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times
Ability to travel independently throughout multiple NAMS facilities including customer job sites
