Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person's individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital is currently recruiting for a Lead Equipment Repair Technician to perform regularly scheduled maintenance and mechanical repairs to all types of motorized vehicles and equipment for CSH and HWDMC to ensure dependability, safety and to maximize useful service life.

Job Duties:

  • Performs preventive maintenance as assigned by supervisor to include all tasks listed on PM work order;

  • Complete documentation accurately and timely;

  • Inspects vehicles for any unreported repair needs;

  • Performs complex repairs to vehicles and equipment;

  • Performs work within established safety requirements and current policies and procedures;

  • Procure needed parts from approved vendors as needed for maintenance and repairs;

  • Reviews charge card receipts to ensure sales tax is not charged and submits for monthly purchase card reconciliation;

  • Ensures Micro and SWAM vendors are used in accordance with State of Virginia mandates;

  • Performs periodic weekly shop cleaning with daily cleaning of areas assigned as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Any and all qualifications that you have must be represented in your application/Resume as verifiable work experience. *

  • Working knowledge of diagnostic tools and troubleshooting processes, repair techniques, and procedures as related to the work required for a wide variety of motorized vehicles and equipment.

  • Experience as a Lead mechanic in the supervision of others performing this work.

  • Basic computer knowledge required.

  • Valid Virginia Driver's License required.

  • Use of computer based diagnostic and testing equipment.

  • Competency in all types of safety working practices and PPE.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Ability to use all types of hand tools, power tools, vehicle lifts and safety equipment required to perform a wide variety of maintenance and repairs as required in this position.

  • Must demonstrate comprehensive understanding and technical proficiency in work performed including the use of technical information and repair manuals/data sources required to perform job functions.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor as needed for repair of vehicles.

Additional Considerations

  • Equipment repair training.

  • Work experience in the maintenance and repair of motorized vehicles and equipment.

  • Use of computerized maintenance software preferred.
