Lead Engineer- Product Development

Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc. (ACT) is a premier thermal management solutions company, focusing on custom applications of two-phase heat transfer technology. Our Tekgard division specializes in engineering customized thermal management solutions for military, government, and industrial applications. Currently we have openings in our York facility for a Lead Engineer, Product Development.

SUMMARY: This is a hands-on position and involves all aspects of planning and managing Product Development projects from bid and proposal (B&P) to final deliverables. Perform mechanical and thermal design and analyses to support project requirements. Manage all aspects of engineering projects including concept generation, proposal development, project schedule, personnel allocation, progress tracking, customer interaction, and budget control. Manage multiple projects, engineers and technician staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Assist Sales and Marketing personnel in evaluating potential opportunities.

  • Write proposals and/or quotation for customers including Bill of materials and engineering hours estimates, as required.

  • Conduct electrical, mechanical, structural, and thermal design analyses per customer specifications.

  • Generate technical data package including drawings and recommended spare parts lists per customer requirements.

  • Document reports, both interim and final, detailing program progress, problems, and proposed solutions.

  • Communicate progress with customer using tools such as an Integrated Master Schedule, Action Item List, Risk Register, etc.

  • Generate, disposition, and implement Engineering Change Notices and generate Configuration Management Accounting Sheets, as required.

  • Mentor engineers and technicians by completing Quarterly Performance Reviews with Product Development staff

  • Help recruit and interview new engineers and technicians.

  • Document program schedules.

  • Establish and document work plan for laboratory technicians to complete proposed tasks.

  • Evaluate and report test results.

  • Responsible for the financial performance of the Product Development Team.

  • Report Product Development Team performance monthly

  • Forecasting & Budgets

  • Bids & Proposals

  • Bookings, Revenue & Expenses

  • Authorize disposition of Nonconforming Materials.

  • Coordinate activities with regard to risk assessment, as required.

  • Conduct a review of customer Contracts, as required.

  • Follow all company rules and policies.

  • This includes being familiar with, and following, ITAR/export guidelines pertaining to e- mails, technical information and products designated as either ITAR or export controlled.

  • Follow Digital Product Definition and Coordinate Measurement Systems procedures, as required.

EDUCATION, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering or Science related fields such as Physics with a minimum of 8 years in a technically oriented company.

  • M.S. degree in Engineering Management or M.B.A. is preferred.

  • Prior experience in using modern design and analysis software such as SolidWorks (CAD), Autodesk, Mathcad etc.

  • Good verbal and written skills essential.

  • Managing in-person and web/video presentations is essential.

  • Prior experience using FEA and/or CFD.

  • Prior experience in the design and development of custom thermal products.

  • Prior experience in Sales and marketing of thermal products.

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be authorized to work in the US. US Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Individual (as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) preferred due to ITAR responsibilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand and walk frequently

  • The employee will be required to stoop, reach, crouch, and bend occasionally

  • The employee will be required to use a computer mouse and keypad to navigate and input data frequently

  • The employee will need to perform tasks requiring fine manipulation and good hand/eye coordination frequently

  • The vision requirements include both close and far vision.

  • The job duties require the employee to use a telephone and to hear and speak with others frequently

  • The employee will be required to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 10 frequently and 25 pounds occasionally

  • The work environment is office based with frequent exposure to production and technician areas, including some exposure to fumes and chemicals. Personal protective equipment is provided where required.

  • While performing this job the employee may be subjected to tight deadlines, changes in client demands, and other challenges that may be stressful in nature

The Product Engineer is part of the Engineering team and will act as a comprehensive technical resource and have ownership and responsibility that will include: * Project performance to budgeted engineering hours and design schedule. * Product design to meet performance, reliability, serviceability, and user features * Communication and management of the product approval process until receipt of all approvals. * Organization and consistency of Product History files and document control. * Efficient completion of customer driven and internal engineering changes. * Provide support to the production team during unit construction and testing. Work scope will vary to meet the needs of the projects assigned, and require knowledge of electrical & mechanical systems, and the MRP knowledge to manage the interaction of Engineering inputs to the Purchasing and Planning functions. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: * Utilize internal and/or external expert resources to ensure system component selections will meet requirements for: * All customer specifications and drawings * Refrigeration * Electrical/Control * Mechanical design * Operations and Maintenance manuals * Lead the Design Review process, component print release, and Bill of Material creation to ensure requirements are met. * Work with Electrical and Mechanical Designers to define and document component * Customer interface * Internal structure * Bill of Materials and Routings * Material purchase (sheet metal, foam, custom parts) * Build/assembly instruction * Support Quality to create test procedures and production test data sheets to ensure build quality and product performance validation. * Support 1st Build support for the organization: * Direct Mechanical and Electrical designers through knowledge of manufacturing processes and applications. * Proactively engage shop floor associates for their feedback and incorporate lessons learned into future designs. * Coordinate As-Built changes. * Close the product development engineering activity by assuring completed updates to all models, drawings, BOM, routings, and product approvals. * Ensure that Product History files are maintained to provide a clear understanding of changes, the effect of changes, and change approval for products through their life cycle. * Provide customers with technical, logistic, and service support through the life cycle of the product. Qualifications: Education/ Experience: * BS degree in engineering discipline or equivalent job experience, with strong analytical skills and seasoned communication skills. * 3-5 years experience minimum in areas related to the responsibilities defined above. * Strong written and oral presentation skills. Capable of directing field service personnel. * Technical Experience in the HVAC field for military, commercial or industrial application. Emphasis on thermal product design and heat transfer sciences with a solid understanding of air to air, liquid to air, and liquid to liquid systems. * Strong analytical skills to be able to analyze empirical data. * Competent with Microsoft Office. * Intermediate SolidWorks 3D modeling skills, and knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and processes. * Ability to lead and to accomplish goals through high levels of personal commitment and responsibility. * Working knowledge of military performance specifications and testing is a plus. Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, customer specifications, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
