Job Summary

Responsible for distributed generation interconnections in either Maine (Central Maine Power), New York (NYSEG and RG&E), and/or Connecticut (UI).

The engineer will lead teams/projects that solve complex problems taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. Able to work independently with guidance on only the most complex tasks. Participates and represents UI on industry associations. Follow updates in research and development in the power industry, specifically in the area of distributed energy resources, through training and industry associations.

Applies and interprets company, local, state, and national codes and standards and ensures Compliance with regulatory requirements. Conducts feasibility studies, completes estimates and develops engineering criteria.


1.Perform detailed, complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology & principles & other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve processes/services. Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & UI polices/procedures.

2.Solves complex Distributed Generation (DG) problems. Utilizes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions (e.g. Customer generators, photovoltaic systems, fuel cells). Anticipate & make recommendations using best practices with respect to customer & stakeholder needs.

3.Approve, maintain, & understand drawings (e.g. schematics, one-line diagrams). Develop & specify equipment, assemble documents & other requirements for assignments of complex level of difficulty using depth & breadth of expertise in own discipline.

4.Serve as SME for generator interconnections. Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend best practices and/or process improvements. Represents Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Engineering on projects, task forces and studies. Participate in Industry associations. May be required to make presentations to regulatory/public entities.

5.Lead teams, mentor & review design and engineering work of others. Lead others to specify & design systems to resolve complex problems in non-std. situations & develop creative solutions. Explain difficult concepts & influence others.

6.Possess a depth and breadth of experience in distributed generation and knowledge of internal/external business and regulatory issues. Maintains knowledge of leading edge techniques or technology through participation in professional associations. Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities.

7.Develop business cases & manage projects/processes/initiatives or teams in accordance with applicable UI guidelines. Coordinate phases of engineering for assigned portions of a project/program.

8.Forecast, plan, schedule, monitor, control budget/estimates, construction plans and material orders. Assist in the management of resource allocation including developing forecasts and plans to insure adequate resources are available.

Skills and Requirements

Education & Experience Required:

  • 5 - 8 years of experience in Engineering.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET (or equivalent) accredited college/university.

  • Advanced knowledge of distributed energy resources.

  • Knowledge of national and international standards, regulations, and compliance requirements associated with distributed energy resources.

  • Experience with single-line diagrams and site plan layout drawings.

Experience Preferred:

  • Registered Professional Engineer or ability to obtain certification.

  • Experience with three-line diagrams and control schematics.

  • Experience with circuit modelling software applications such as CYMDIST.

  • Knowledge of IEEE 1547 standards.

  • Knowledge of FERC/NERC/NPCC and state regulations.

  • Specialized advanced training is also preferred (e.g. PTI, WPI , ECNE PUI, or a graduate level engineering degree).

We are actively hiring Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or Structural Engineers, at all experience levels, for our Transmission Substation Project Development team. We are flexible with office locations (Connecticut, Maine, and New York), and remote work options may be considered for highly qualified candidates.</strong></p><p>This position is responsible for oversight on the Transmission &amp; Substation (T&amp;S) portion of AVANGRID&rsquo;s capital plan. Responsibilities will include overall portfolio tracking, forecasting, study/project prioritization, and development of strategies to advance projects from the planning phase through execution/construction activities. Demonstrated ability to oversee, prepare, and deliver concise communications to all levels including internal Executives and Sr. Leadership as well as external Regulators, and other key stakeholders.</p><p>The following are some specific responsibilities for this position:</p><ul><li>Demonstrated ability to develop complex analytical tools (e.g. Excel, Power BI, Access, etc.) to monitor and prioritize study/project activities to ensure informed decision making.</li></ul><ul><li>Responsible for ensuring appropriate investment oversight and decision making for all T&amp;S capital projects from inception through construction.</li><li>Lead participant in the technical Transmission System Review Group (TSRG) and financial Electric System Planning (ESP) governance group responsible for vetting and approving new projects prior to delivering them for execution. Includes thorough review and feedback of submitted TSRG stakeholder materials. May take on role of chair or vice-chair of TSRG for AVANGRID.</li><li>Supports all aspects of AVANGRID&rsquo;s Long Term Outlook of the T&amp;S CAPEX investment portfolio including rate case preparations, regulatory funding commitments, ISO reporting, etc.</li><li>Extensive presentation and report preparation (and or review/editing) skills are essential including the ability to concisely communicate decision making at all internal and external stakeholder levels (e.g. executives, regulator&rsquo;s, and ISO&rsquo;s).</li><li>Ability to develop and build collaborative and constructive relationships across internal business areas and teams and/or external stakeholders including regulators.</li><li>Ensure Regulatory and Financial commitments are met through reporting, tracking, and follow-up.</li><li>Portfolio oversight including project prioritization, tracking, budget forecasting, regulatory/variance reporting.</li><li>Contract administration (e.g. RFP, Purchase Orders, contractor hiring, etc.).</li><li>Financial oversight of Transmission Networks Planning (Accounting, SAP, etc.).</li></ul><p>&nbsp;<strong>Key Responsibilities:</strong></p><p>Strategic and Technical Leadership: Provides strategic leadership of internal and external contractor teams working across multiple operating companies and geographic locations.
