To develop custom engineered solutions using non-standard applications of Powell standard products to safely and economically meet customer specifications.

  • Design and consult on complex jobs.

  • Read and interpret customer job specifications.

  • Order materials.

  • Create and transmit project drawings to manufacturing and customer.

  • Interface with sales, purchasing, customer, shop, and service technicians.

  • Completed tasks are checked by peers.

  • Create proposal drawings in support of sales and estimating.

  • Direct designers in completing wiring diagrams.

  • Responsible for checking the jobs of lower level engineers before jobs are sent out for customer approval or released to manufacturing.

  • Work leader responsibilities may include: task assignment, performance feedback, on-the-job training, directing lower level engineering personnel to appropriate sources of information, products, vendors, etc.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in an Engineering role.

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or related area.

  • EIT and PE preferred.

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and written.

  • Available to answer technical questions from designers and engineers.

  • Able to interact on a regular basis with manufacturing and shop personnel.

  • Able to interact on a regular basis with service technicians.

  • Able to apply product knowledge and technical skills to quickly solve complex application challenges independently. May require consultation on most difficult.

  • Basic computer skills using Oracle, Word, Excel.

  • Ability to order material electronically.

  • Advanced drafting/CAD skills.

  • Create project related drawings and documents for manufacturing and customer.

  • Create documentation to support field service when required.

  • Advanced to thorough understanding of electrical design and circuitry.

  • Advanced to thorough understanding of power system application, relay application and coordination, and short circuit studies.

  • Able to read, interpret, and modify; electrical symbols, characters, and drawings.

  • Able to apply industry codes and standards (ANSI, NEC, etc.) as applicable to his/her assigned projects.

  • Troubleshoot complex electrical issues with equipment from production to installation.

  • Innovative to adapt existing Powell products and processes to non-standard applications based on safety, quality, delivery, and cost.

  • Innovative to improve existing products and processes..

  • Learn policies and procedures, work instruction, Safety Rules and Regulations, and vendor products.

  • Attend in house and outside training sessions.

  • Attend local professional associations.

  • Become proficient with all Powell product offerings. Current and legacy.

  • Familiarity with 5+ non-Powell product lines.

  • Able to travel to customer sites for project specific requirements.

  • Check completed tasks of other designers or engineers.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Create proposal drawings in support of sales and estimating.

  • Provide technical assistance to sales, manufacturing, engineering, inspection, and field service on project issues.

  • Basic to very proficient understanding of initial project reviews (i.e., acquired knowledge of specs that Powell should take exception to and specs that require special attention; able to accurately interpret customer specs, etc.).

  • Assist in mentorship of lower level engineers through development of training programs and project support.

  • Assist Information Technology Department with development and testing of software based Engineering tools.

  • Assist in the publishing of articles, and attend seminars.

  • Assist in writing of industry codes and standards.

  • Member of IEEE.
