Product Engineer: Lead Electrical Engineer 2

MAJOR JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Trains, develops and evaluates employees

  • Develops and coordinates timing of product design programs

  • Provides technical support for solving assembly plant problems

  • Conducts engineering activities for VDP pilot line programs

  • Conducts engineering activities for model year start of production programs

  • Evaluates design proposals

  • Coordinates overall engineering activities with other departments and/or divisions

  • Initiates and evaluates cost studies

  • Coordinates with vendors and/or customers

  • Writes technical reports and proposals

  • Reviews legislative and regulatory proposals or actions to determine impact on

  • projects

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint Intermediate level

  • Knowledge with Lotus Notes or other email communication tool Intermediate level

  • Good interpersonal skills involving ability to work effectively cross-functionally and

  • cross-culturally

  • Good written and oral communication skills necessary for meetings and presentations

  • Ability to work well with others, exhibiting teamwork skills

  • Partners with senior management to analyze and solve issues

  • Ability to multitask by handling diverse assignments concurrently

  • Mentoring skills necessary to provide support and constructive performance feedback

  • Expert knowledge of design, development and test engineering, manufacturing

  • processes, assembly operations and Central Office functions

  • General position related experience: 14-16 years

  • Relevant auto industry experience in Vehicle Electrical Systems Development required , min 14-16 years

  • Past GM work experience preferred

  • Areas of expertise include: Electrical and/or Electrical Systems Testing, Design, Analysis, Packaging, Validation

  • Regarded as an expert in the field of vehicle electrical systems development

REQUIRED EDUCATION/TRAINING/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Masters degree preferred

  • Industry recognized affiliations and/or awards preferred

DESCRIPTION: This is an opportunity in a high growth area of emerging Global Regulatory Fuel Economy and CO2 reduction requirements. Seeking highly motivated candidates that possess creativity and initiative as well as a high level of independent judgment. Candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Technical project management of 12V/48V Energy Storage Systems.

  • Managing supplier timing; running PDT meetings; issue investigation and resolution; ensuring part and/or software deliveries to benches, vehicles, and assembly plants; etc.

  • Develop & Maintain commodity specific documentation

  • Document, coordinate, and implement design changes

  • Develop and Maintain Global subsystem/component technical specifications templates (SSTS/CTS)

  • Create and maintain Interface Control Design (ICD) strategy and ICD templates

  • "Close the Loop" on learnings by updating required information (Best Practices, GM Specifications, SOR Template, etc.) and document progress in Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS)

  • Develop technical specifications for energy storage and power switching systems based on 12/48 V systems requirements

  • Responsible for development, execution and evaluation of designs (including subsystems), analysis, development & testing related to energy storage systems and 12 volt energy recovery systems

  • Review all In-process Electrical test plans

  • Participate in root causing and resolution of field issues related to energy storage systems, and recommend appropriate course of actions

  • Work with the Purchasing organization to assess energy storage systems supplier capabilities

  • Support the development of future strategy and roadmaps for energy storage systems as appropriate

  • Support the generation, development, implementation and evaluation of new energy storage systems as appropriate

  • Stay abreast of advanced energy storage technologies and competitive products to achieve low cost, efficient energy storage systems

  • Maintain state of the art knowledge of methods for electromagnetic, thermal and durability analysis and testing of energy storage systems

  • Travel as required

BASIC REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSEE required, MSEE preferred

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, required

QUALIFICATIONS

PRODUCT ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE: Selected candidate shall possess

  • 3+ years automotive experience

  • Design Release Engineering experience with automotive components

  • High level understanding of Automotive Safety Integrity Levels and their application to 12V power system design and integration

  • High level of competence in writing and comprehending software requirements

  • Knowledge of vehicle serial data communications (CAN, GMLAN, LIN,) and electrical architectures (Class 2, Common Architecture, Global A, and Global B)

  • Good knowledge of product design and development cycles GVDP (Global Vehicle Development Process)

  • High level knowledge of automotive sub-systems requiring ASIL rated Power

  • Ability to read system engineering schematics and understand electronic / electrical functionality

  • Experience in troubleshooting software anomalies using software development tools (including data capture and analysis).

  • Knowledge of microcontroller architectures, memory technologies, and programming

  • Working knowledge of automotive component and system level test plans, including EMC testing.

  • High level understanding of hardware and software design and failure modes in electronic modules

  • Experienced in performing system, sub-system, software, and component level DFMEAs

  • Experience in the automotive product release and specification process e.g., E2, APM, GART, DOORS, RTC, Synergy

ADDITIONAL BASIC REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work independently and learn new technology areas without formal instruction

  • In-depth knowledge of electrical circuit design and operating principles and performance characteristics of high power switching devices and energy density capacitors for automotive applications

  • Results driven individual with high levels of initiative and proactivity

  • High level of oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in job-related area required

  • Communicate ideas, plans, and results effectively via presentations and written reports

  • Work effectively with peers, management, operations groups, personnel, and outside organizations

  • High level analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex

ADDITIONAL BASIC PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in performing system and component level DFMEAs

  • Knowledge of energy storage design principles and system integration

  • Knowledge related to power electronics for voltage regulation, cell balancing and energy storage system safety tests

  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability and low-cost manufacturing of electrical devices
