The National Building Museum educates, entertains, and engages people about the built environment and challenges them to advocate for a sustainable and equitable future.

Position Summary

The Lead Educator for Building Stories Program will support the programming goals of the National Building Museum's new exhibition through school and community outreach in DC. This new exhibit explores the world of architecture, engineering, construction, and design found in the pages of children's books and is the corner stone of the Museum's future exhibits. The ideal candidate will have experience as a Museum Educator and will report to the Senior Manager of Youth and Community Programs. This full-time limited term position is grant-funded through December 2025.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop an outreach strategy to coordinate field trip visits by DCPS Title 1 schools.

  • With the Senior Manager, develop a field trip to include an on-site activity and pre- and post-visit classroom materials.

  • Manage exhibition and program evaluation consultant.

  • With Senior Manager, plan and execute the Big Draw annual event.

  • Develop and execute 8 open houses annually at local schools and libraries.

  • Manage the Building Readers Club, the Museum's online program to provide ongoing engagement with Building Stories content.

  • Manage the 8 Building Stories kiosks/reading nooks that will be deployed at DC public libraries. These kiosks are designed to engage library goers with the content of Building Stories and the Building Readers Club.

  • Coordinate periodic and ongoing distribution of free books.

  • Develop and lead monthly hands-on drop-in programs on and off site.

  • Act as main point of contact for the DC Public Library and DC Library Foundation grants.

  • Manage potential partnership with external community organizations who align with Building Stories.

  • Coordinate with the Museum's communications team to publicize events and programs.

  • Participate in ongoing programming meetings.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in a museum education preferred.

  • Undergraduate degree in applicable field preferred.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects at one time.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail.

  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills.
