Lead Drainage Engineer - Transportation Infrastructure

We are now hiring a Lead Drainage Project Engineer to add to our team in California to lead Drainage designs for road/highway/rail/transit projects in the West. You can work out of our Ontario, Pasadena or Irvine Offices.

In this role you will act as the primary interface with internal design teams and take the lead for all Drainage aspects of the project with the client and our JV partners on both conventional and design/build projects. You will be a key member of our Road/Highway Practice for California, reporting into a VP and will be initially supporting a major Rail/Transit project upgrade: the Foothills Extension Goldline. Our projects include new urban highway design, highway rehabilitation, railroad grade separation, construction of new bypass lanes and auxiliary lanes, widening of lanes, and reconfiguration of local street interchanges.

We expect you to be able to perform (and direct other engineers) in the design of all drainage elements relating to road and highway projects, including hydrologic analysis, inlet design, storm sewer design, ditch and channel design, cross drain design, retention/detention basin design, water quality analysis, adequate outfall design and design of on and off site drainage facilities. As a leader, you must be able to demonstrate prior experience in the preparation plan documents and reports, such as of storm-water plans and permit applications for highway projects, drainage criteria documentation, drainage design reports, and pond siting reports.

Responsibilities :

  • Functions as Principal Drainage Design Engineer on small, medium and large projects, assuming responsibility for the work of the group.

  • Leads other Engineers and design personnel in technical excellence and growth in the Quality Improvement Process.

  • Provides technical consultations for interdisciplinary analytical studies and analyses.

  • Ensures compliance of design with all applicable codes and regulations, providing the seal and signature of the professional engineer when required by statute or contract.

  • Helps determine budget estimates and staffing requirements for the defined scope and schedule. May assist with other administrative and technical duties.

Requirements:

  • 4-year degree in Civil Engineering (or a related field)

  • 10+ years of related work experience in water resources engineering design (drainage design, hydrologic studies/evaluations.

  • Professional Engineer ( PE) registration is required.

  • CALTRANS experience is preferred

  • Ability to perform in a lead capacity (must be able to demonstrate leadership skills/abilities through prior work experience)

Role: The individual will supervise all discipline design/drafting personnel on larger and more-complex projects. Group size is typically more than 10 employees. Draws upon extensive experience, particularly with typical engineering/construction projects. Responsibilities: Defines discipline design organization and participation on a project, including execution of discipline work involving design approach, schedules, standards, budgets, and procedures to meet client scope of work requirements. Makes staffing assignments and monitors productivity and technical proficiency of the assigned personnel. Reviews work produced to ensure that applicable codes, standards, and procedures are followed, and that quality is acceptable. Provides training and development, conducts performance evaluations, and takes corrective action as necessary. May make recommendations for salary increases and/or promotions. Advises engineering and project management regarding any problem areas, staffing requirements, progress slippage, scope changes, budget overruns, or other events which could negatively affect project completion and/or profitability. Serves as Job Leader, with responsibility for preliminary through final project completion, including liaison with clients, suppliers, and contractors. Provides design direction, making decisions and/or obtaining technical staff assistance when necessary. Recommends design methods and equipment use for discipline standards. Oversees application of state-of-the-art technology in the design area and recommends improvements to production methods. Responsible for the progress and quality of drawings produced by those supervised. Ensures that checking is performed in accordance with discipline checking policy and procedures. Coordinates discipline design work with project staff and other engineering disciplines. Initiates and/or reviews change order requests for additions, deletions, or changes to the original scope of work. Actively participates in the company Quality Improvement Process (QIP). Qualifications: 2-year technical degree or certificate of completion in CAD design from an accredited technical institution (or equivalent) is preferred, and typically 12 years or more of related experience (including supervisory experience). Significant experience and expertise with Microstation and Autocad software programs is essential for this role. Requirements include strong PC and CAD skills, as well as knowledge of the capabilities and efficiencies of utilizing specific computer software to complete design assignments.
