The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking multiple skilled Transportation Engineers (In-Training) to serve as Lead Design Engineers in Shoreline, WA. The Lead Designer is responsible for activities that are necessary to support the scoping, development, and implementation of assigned projects in areas including, but not limited to, safety, preservation, fish passage, and improvement. The Lead Designer position highly impacts WSDOT's mission to provide and support safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality for people and businesses.

Note: This position has an in-training plan that can be filled at the Transportation Engineer 1 or 2 level. The salaries for each position are:

Transportation Engineer 1 - $64,474 - $86,637 annually, depending on qualifications.

Transportation Engineer 2 - $71,101 - $95,621 annually, depending on qualifications.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Lead Designer will:

  • Proactively prepares plans, specification, estimates, documentation, data, or other items necessary for the successful delivery of assigned projects.

  • Assist in the preparation generation and monitoring of schedules scopes of work budget project reports, plans, specifications, estimates, documentation, and data pertaining to assigned projects.

  • Manage project timelines with minimal supervision. When delays or potential delays are identified, promptly communicate these to stakeholders or team members involved in the project.

  • Recognizes and focuses on key priorities and reviews, formulates, and recommends engineering solutions.

Qualifications

To be considered for Transportation Engineer 1 opportunity, the following are required:

  • High School Diploma or GED and B.S. in Civil Engineering

OR

  • Associate degree and an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.

OR

  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Technician 3 and Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.

OR

  • One (1) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 and Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.

To be considered for Transportation Engineer 2 opportunity, the following are required:

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering or in another relate field of study.

OR

  • Associate degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Technician 3

OR

  • Associate degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 and an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.

OR

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Technician 3

OR

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 and Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.

In addition, the following are required at both levels:

  • Valid Driver's license

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil Engineering, or a BS Engineering degree in a closely related field.

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Engineer Intern (El), Intern Engineer (IE) certification or verification of a passing mark on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.

  • The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 3%, effective on July 1, 2024.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
