The Clinical Trend and Analytics team leverages advanced scientific techniques, forecasting, and machine learning to predict financial and clinical outcomes in order to guide investments that improve health outcomes and reduce costs. In this exciting start-up environment, you'll have the opportunity to develop data science processes from the ground up and work directly with decision-making executives to shape the future of Humana's most important strategic initiatives.


As the Lead Data Scientist, you will collaborate with clinical leaders, program owners, and other analytic resources to set objectives, approaches, and work plans. Specifically, this role will be involved in sizing opportunities to mitigate low value care in the healthcare space. You will research, build, and evaluate new statistical methodologies to assess causal relationships between clinical risk factors and a variety of health outcomes. These findings will be incorporated into the work Humana does to improve the health and wellbeing of Humana's members. You will package your results and communicate them to technical and non-technical business partners and executive decision-makers.


  • Influence organizational strategy by championing innovative ideas with analytical teams, business partners, and clinicians. You are recognized as a leader who helps drive results for both the analytics organization as well as our business partners.

  • Support our key business partners within Humana's Enterprise Clinical Management organization to find opportunities to improve health outcomes and lower healthcare costs

  • Gain trust and respect by measuring, validating and explaining your results, taking ownership of the end-to-end process.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience leading large data science projects, managing requirements across stakeholders to define the analytic approach and technical solutions

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects, manage expectations, and deliver results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • Ability to scope, frame, and deliver data analyses that leverage large datasets including medical claims, pharmacy claims, and/or laboratory results

  • Demonstrated understanding of advanced statistical methods used to estimate causal relationships in observational data

  • Demonstrated ability to bring together and combine disparate datasets

  • Demonstrated ability to develop nuanced study designs that are used to answer specific clinical questions

  • Clear oral and written communication skills. Experience interpreting and communicating results of complex analyses to technical and non-technical business partners and executive decision makers

  • 4 years of professional experience leveraging large sets of structured and unstructured healthcare data

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong business acumen, including a deep understanding of healthcare payer economics

  • Demonstrated familiarity with clinical concepts related to a broad range of clinical conditions and disease states - experience with oncology, behavioral health and chronic conditions would be particularly valuable

  • Master's or PhD Degree in a quantitative discipline such as Economics, Epidemiology, Clinical Informatics, and/or related fields. Clinical degrees or actuarial certifications also preferred.

  • Experience developing and validating machine learning models and tools

  • Experience with cloud-based ecosystems (GCP, AWS, Azure, Databricks)

  • Experience working in Agile environments

  • Experience working with EMR data

Always innovating, our team continually delivers sustainable solutions for our projects, our partners and the planet.</p><p>The Level I Project Scientist uses technical and scientific knowledge along with effective critical thinking, decision-making and communication skills to ensure that assessment, field work and documentation effectively support project requirements.</p><p><strong>Responsibilities include:</strong></p><ul><li>Conducting site reconnaissance to identify contaminants and other environmental risks in support of due diligence reports.</li><li>Collecting and compiling all documents including municipal, state, and federal file review, insurance documents, etc. to support documentation of site history and ensure complete understanding of property use and contaminant exposure.</li><li>Coordinating field activities, including site access, subcontractors, laboratory bottle ware, sample pickups, and field equipment. Ensure the site is prepared for sampling, including marking the site and checking for utilities before initiating drilling and sampling.</li><li>Overseeing subcontractors on site (drillers, excavation crews, etc.) to ensure that work is completed timely and in accordance with the scope of work (SOW). Providing direction to site personnel as needed in interpreting SOW and seeking guidance from assigned APM/PM/SPM when SOW issues/questions arise.</li><li>Directing the installation of wells and the advancement of borings to support soil, groundwater, sediment, air and concrete sampling.</li><li>Following Ransom procedures to document site conditions at the time of sampling for reference in project reporting and project review. Ensuring appropriate sample preparation for submission to lab for analysis and following chain of custody procedures.</li><li>Taking responsibility for safety of self and others on the site. Following Corporate Health and Safety Plan (HASP) for incident reporting and follow up.</li><li>Documenting findings and ensuring that data is presented in appropriate Ransom formats/templates, to include field notes, well/boring logs.</li><li>Developing draft reports, letters, work plans etc. as directed by the Project Manager. Presenting conclusions and recommendations for evaluation and validation before finalizing. Developing summary tables, project logs, and other site data documentation using appropriate templates for data presentation. Coordinating and preparing figure requests for submittal to drafting company/personnel.</li></ul><p><strong>Qualified candidates will have:</strong></p><ul><li>Bachelor&rsquo;s Degree in environmentally oriented field (geology, environmental science, hydrology, engineering, etc.)</li><li>2-3 years of experience (This can include internships or entry level positions that provide exposure to general environmental science concepts and methodologies; Master&rsquo;s degree is considered the equivalent of 1 year of experience.)</li><li>Demonstrated understanding of environmental and geologic principles to assess environmental contamination scenarios and perform sampling.</li><li>Familiarity and proficiency with field sampling equipment operation including operation of peristaltic pumps, bladder pumps, water level meters, water quality meters, photoionization detector (PID), sight level; field screening procedures including headspace screening, oleophilic dye tests, and ambient air screening; sample collection procedures for soil, groundwater, porewater, soil vapor, and indoor air in proper containers; and subsurface investigation methods (test pits, direct push drilling, hollow stem auger, etc.).</li><li>Proficiency in identification and logging of soil types.</li><li>Ability to collect and interpret data. Confidence in drawing preliminary conclusions and making recommendations. Ability to make good decisions based on understanding of project and client requirements.</li><li>Ability to present complex technical information in audience appropriate language and format to ensure clarity. Ability to customize information and data findings based on client&rsquo;s needs.</li><li>Strong technical writing skills and communicates clearly and effectively, adjusting as appropriate for the audience</li><li>Ability to lead site events and demonstrate confidence in directing staff and contractors.</li><li>Ability to independently organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines as assigned by Project Manager and optimize availability to assist with last minute requests or change of direction.</li><li>Fundamental knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.</li><li>Understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects.</li><li>Produces quality work that meets client, team, co-worker expectations.
