Job Description:

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Routinely inspect all buildings for cleanliness and take steps to ensure such by utilizing team members and / or the companies contracted to clean buildings.

  • Will be working directly with the Department Director and contracted companies that clean various buildings to ensure fulfillment of their contracts.

  • Assist with the drafting of cleaning bid's, proposals, and contracts, etc.

  • Routinely discuss with the Department Director ideas to improve efficiency of custodial tasks and outcomes.

  • This same individual will be responsible for the oversight of a custodial crew that cleans multiple buildings.

  • Start each day by communicating with their crew and assigning their tasks.

  • Create a Plan of Action that ensures end results are achieved.

  • This person will be working with the public and as such will need to show professionalism and tact in relation to resolving problems and concerns.

  • Communicate with supervisors in a responsible manner.

  • This person will be working directly with other supervisors and team members and will be expected to seek solutions to problems with fellow supervisors.

  • Must follow direction well. Following through and completion of tasks is critical in this role.

  • Keep up with inventory items. Report missing or depleted items. Order items when necessary.

  • Willingness to work after hours.

  • Provide your own transportation to and from work.

  • Willing to attend training classes and arrange training for crew members.

  • A willingness to develop and train their personnel to be forward thinking and decisive individuals willing to complete their assignments is expected.

  • Must show attentiveness to the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) warnings of various chemicals. Must keep SDS up-to-date.

  • Keep equipment in working order and inventoried.

  • Assist with the yearly fiscal budgeting of necessary items in the custodial department.

  • Be attentive to the cleanliness and safety of the work environment.

  • May need to operate machinery (Examples: floor polishers, buffers, large vacuums).

  • Willingness to answer phone calls and critical emails after-hours.

  • Ensuring dumpsters throughout the County are emptied regularly or according to their schedules.

  • Assist with and carry out the routine cleaning duties of County facilities. To include:

  • Grounds

  • Offices

  • Restrooms

  • Closets

  • Private and confidential areas (with approved access)

  • Jails

  • Public areas

  • Stairwells

  • Elevators

  • Breakrooms

  • Countertops

  • Kitchens and kitchenets

  • Closets, mezzanines, mechanical rooms, etc.

  • May be expected to respond to after-hours emergencies.

  • Responding to emergencies examples:

  • Weather related (i.e. leaking windows and roofs will require floor cleaning / water extraction.

  • Equipment failure resulting in flooding, smoke damage, etc.

  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by one (1) year of general office support experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Physical Demands:

  • Occasional lifting (up to 50 pounds), walking, heat and cold, heights, tight confined areas, climbing ladders, and operating various machines.

  • Must have prior experience in managerial and leadership of a team of ten or more people.

  • Working in cold, hot, dusty, slippery and wet environments.

  • Experience operating cleaning machines and equipment.

  • Be attentive.

  • Contribute thoughts and ideas.

  • Learn and develop skills in relation to Facilities Services Custodial division.

  • Take on challenges and work independently in various locations.

Cleaning will be generally defined as:

  • Removing and disposing of trash inside and outside the building.

  • Dusting high and low areas such as window frames, plants, appliances, desks, countertops, etc.

  • Cleaning outside and inside windows.

  • Vacuuming

  • Mopping

  • Waxing floors and other surfaces.

  • Applying furniture or metal surface polishes.

  • Treating drain lines with appropriate cleaners and maintainers.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment):

Special Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
