Job Description Summary

The Lead Building Inspector is a full-time supervisory employee of the building department essential to and charged with the daily technical and administrative work associated with plan review and building inspection of residential and commercial demolition and building projects of all types. This position is responsible for the supervision, training, and professional development of building inspectors teaching timely communication of building code knowledge to coworkers, homebuilders, general contractors, subcontractors, the public, both in the office at the service counter and in the field. This training includes a strong emphasis on communication skills and customer service. The Lead Building Inspector shall possess the ability to:

  • Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism when dealing with coworkers, County management, the general public, developers, contractors, subcontractors, architects, and engineers through personal interaction and written communications.

  • Be a patient and excellent listener to fully understand the question(s) asked or issue(s) comminated so to gather all pertinent and necessary information from all stakeholders.

  • Demonstrate empathy and genuine concern with a supportive can-do customer service attitude as often things are not going well for the stakeholder.

  • Have an excellent eye for detail with all written communication.

  • Demonstrate an air of confidence in their knowledge of building codes and their ability to perform inspections.

  • Keep an open mind in seeking out solutions for the public, understanding that there are rules, and there are exceptions to rules, mindful that no two projects are exactly alike.

Testing will be required for applicants who are selected to move forward in the hiring process who indicate bilingual (English/Spanish) abilities. This test will certify the selected, bilingual candidate and allow for a bilingual pay differential (begins July 1, 2024)

Job Description

The primary role of the Lead Building Inspector is to supervise, manage, and train the building inspectors by applying their code knowledge while drawing from their practical experience in performing field inspection work on demolition and construction projects to ensure that building inspection work is be performed thoroughly, consistently and without bias. The following job duties are established to outline the basic duties and responsibilities of this position. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Job Duty 1: Building Inspection (70%):

  • Present themselves in a professional and courteous manner and appearance at all times.

  • Lead, train, and supervise the building inspectors.

  • Assist with the professional development of the building inspectors.

  • Perform building inspections.

  • Monitor and manage the inspection workload on a daily basis.

  • Keep the building official informed of all issues facing the building inspection operation.

  • Assist the building official with the development and enforcement of building department policies.

  • Keep personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, hearing protection, fire resistant clothing, and hard hat, in your assigned county vehicle at all times.

  • Use appropriate PPE when necessary and appropriate, while at jobsites.

  • Wear County issued work attire or similar professional clothing when in the field.

  • Read and interpret County Code, ICC building codes and the National Electrical Code

  • Keep all code books in your assigned County vehicle at all times.

  • Verbally communicate with design and construction personnel on the job site, or via phone and email.

  • Provide understandable written inspection results with good spelling of general and construction industry specific terms.

  • Practice courteous, defensive driving habits.

  • Follow policies and procedures, the Weld County Code of Conduct and adhere to strict confidentially guidelines and appropriate release of information outlined in both.

Job Duty 2: Administration (20%):

  • Assist with office coverage and walk-in questions, as needed.

  • Respect your fleet vehicle by keeping the interior and exterior well maintained and clean.

  • Maintain and clean office on a regular basis to maintain a professional appearance.

  • Perpetually maintain your Colorado electrical license through continuing education.

  • Perpetually maintain your ICC certifications through continuing education.

Other Duties as Assigned (10%):

  • Other work as assigned by the building official.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED

  • 5 years of field experience in electrical construction

  • 5 years of field experience in residential and commercial building inspection

  • Colorado driver's license by the employment start date and maintain a valid license for the duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

  • Associate or bachelor's degree from an accredited community college or university

  • 10 years of field experience in electrical construction

  • 10 years of field experience in residential & commercial building inspection

  • Colorado Journeyman or Master Electrician license
  • ICC B1 Residential Building Inspector
  • ICC P1 Residential Plumbing Inspector
  • ICC M1 Residential Mechanical Inspector
  • ICC B2 Commercial Building Inspector
  • ICC P2 Commercial Plumbing Inspector
  • ICC M2 Commercial Mechanical Inspector
  • ICC ANSI A117.1 Accessibility Inspector

This position is exempt (Compensation to determine FLSA status) from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

This range encompasses the nine pay steps available should you receive the position and demonstrate satisfactory performance over time.
