Responsibilities:

The Lead Benefits Specialist is responsible for:

  • Providing on-the-job training, mentor new and established employees and reinforce case management strategies within the agency

  • Resolve client and case manager problems encountered during daily operations and determine appropriate solutions

  • Assign and distribute work, review work for accuracy and completeness, return assignments with recommendations for proper completion, and provide assistance with managing workloads

  • Submit claims for various streams of government benefits including, but not limited to, disability, CAPI, and VA benefits

  • Communicate approval of claim to participant and any other providers currently working with the client to navigate governmental benefits programs

  • Identify additional services to which participants will be referred (such as housing, employment, education)and connect participants to those services through team members

  • Establish and maintain partnerships with employers and community contacts

  • Assist case managers with support and resources to aid them in achieving client goals outlined in Individual Service Plan

  • Case Manager/Benefits will be comfortable and adaptable in using different platforms to capture and store client records and data, managing and tracking claims from the initial filing to determination and appeals.

  • Will be responsible for recording data and ensuring that data is accurate

Requirements:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in social work, social services, public administration, public health or related field (or a combination of education and experience may be considered)

Experience:

  • Experience submitting claims for Social Security, CAPI and VA Benefits

  • Strong Case Management skills and knowledge of available resources in the area

  • Valid California driver's license, insurance and reliable transportation

Special Skills Required to Perform this Position:

  • At least one year of experience in benefits advocacy (2 years without degree); healthcare/benefits administration a plus

  • At least one year of case management experience connecting clients to resources; (2 years without degree)

  • At least one year of experience providing benefits to homeless individuals

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Effective written and oral communications skills

  • Valid California driver's license and dependable transportation with adequate insurance

  • Understanding and demonstrated ability to navigate governmental benefit programs preferred

Preferred Skills for this Position:

  • SOAR and OVA Certified

  • Familiar with HMIS data system

  • Demonstrated experience providing services to participants from diverse backgrounds (ethnic/racial diversity,

  • LGBTQ community and varying socioeconomic histories)

As a staff member of the benefit team, the Peer Support Specialist performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process. Based on similar experiences, this position offers the individuals empathy, support, and advice as challenges are faced along the way. The Peer Support Specialist adds experience-based competencies and real-world examples that complement the training and expertise of the benefit staff members. Responsibilities: The Peer Support Specialist will: * Share personal experiences, skills, strengths, supports and resources in your recovery from mental health and/or substance abuse issues * Accompany participants to appointments and meetings, housing searches, voucher application/ issuance sessions, medical appointments, and any other client-centered activity * Assist participants in developing recovery plans with the skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid them in achieving goals and plans; work with case manager and benefit team in needed steps for self-directed recovery * Assist participants with setting up and sustaining self-help (mutual support) groups and with locating and joining existing groups * Assist Benefit Specialist with helping the clients identify and eliminate barriers in order to submit applications for benefits Required Background and Skills: Education * High school diploma (or GED/High School Equivalence Certificate) Experience: * Personal experience in recovery from mental health and/or substance abuse issues * Personal experience with homelessness; knowledge of the barriers to housing * Proven ability to interact positively with diverse groups of client population with varying education and economic backgrounds * Valid California driver's license, insurance and reliable transportation Preferred Skills for this Position: * 1 - 3 years' experience working with veterans, people in recovery and/or homeless individuals * Bachelor's degree preferred * Experience connecting clients to community resources * SOAR and DVA certified Volunteers of America is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
