The Lead Benefits Specialist is responsible for:

  • Providing on-the-job training, mentor new and established employees and reinforce case management strategies within the agency

  • Resolve client and case manager problems encountered during daily operations and determine appropriate solutions

  • Assign and distribute work, review work for accuracy and completeness, return assignments with recommendations for proper completion, and provide assistance with managing workloads

  • Submit claims for various streams of government benefits including, but not limited to, disability, CAPI, and VA benefits

  • Communicate approval of claim to participant and any other providers currently working with the client to navigate governmental benefits programs

  • Identify additional services to which participants will be referred (such as housing, employment, education)and connect participants to those services through team members

  • Establish and maintain partnerships with employers and community contacts

  • Assist case managers with support and resources to aid them in achieving client goals outlined in Individual Service Plan

  • Case Manager/Benefits will be comfortable and adaptable in using different platforms to capture and store client records and data, managing and tracking claims from the initial filing to determination and appeals.

  • Will be responsible for recording data and ensuring that data is accurate



Bachelor's Degree in social work, social services, public administration, public health or related field (or a combination of education and experience may be considered)


  • Experience submitting claims for Social Security, CAPI and VA Benefits

  • Strong Case Management skills and knowledge of available resources in the area

  • Valid California driver's license, insurance and reliable transportation

Special Skills Required to Perform this Position:

  • At least one year of experience in benefits advocacy (2 years without degree); healthcare/benefits administration a plus

  • At least one year of case management experience connecting clients to resources; (2 years without degree)

  • At least one year of experience providing benefits to homeless individuals

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Effective written and oral communications skills

  • Valid California driver's license and dependable transportation with adequate insurance

  • Understanding and demonstrated ability to navigate governmental benefit programs preferred

Preferred Skills for this Position:

  • SOAR and OVA Certified

  • Familiar with HMIS data system

  • Demonstrated experience providing services to participants from diverse backgrounds (ethnic/racial diversity,

  • LGBTQ community and varying socioeconomic histories)

The Role: Seeking a full-time Family & Leave Specialist experienced in supporting large, mutli-layered organizations. This individual will support the Benefits Team's larger functions but will be primarily focused on managing employee leaves of all kinds, disability and leave vendor/carrier management, plan and process improvement, and the unique challenges of successfully uniting a decentralized corporation. Responsibilities: * Maintain benefit plans with an emphasis on the leave, time off, and disability programs: leave management, payroll balance, tracking utilization, data analytics, and employee communication. * Regularly reconcile and audit leave practices and benefits related to family programs. * Create more efficient business processes to support a complex and decentralized organization. * Act as subject matter expert on all health and welfare benefits needs across the organization. * Oversee implementation of new family benefit programs and suggest changes to current programs and perks. * Work with vendors and brokers to ensure the best plans for employees, holding external partners accountable to SLA, especially the disability and leave carrier. * Work with benefit advisors to analyze plan utilization and benchmarking data to propose enhancements to benefit offerings. * Manage vendor relationships with insurance carriers, leave administrators, consultants and other service providers. * Monitor the legal and regulatory environment as it impacts benefit plans and make recommendations for changes as appropriate. * Help execute on annual enrollment process from planning to managing employee communications, and presenting benefits plans to all employees. * Manage HR Business Partner needs and training related to time off and leave policies. * Work with legal and compliance concerns with utmost professionalism.
