Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Manager, Sports Medicine, the Lead Athletic Trainer is responsible for the organization, planning and coordination of Excela Health Sports Medicine Athletic Training Outreach Program. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: staff recruitment/retention, staff training and orientation, staff supervision (in the absence of the Manager, Sports Medicine), staff accountability measures, workflow management, care of the athlete, ensuring a safe work environment, quality customer service and a commitment to continuous performance improvement, He/she is responsible for scheduling staff, maintaining PI and safety policies, providing input to departmental policies and procedures, orienting new staff, attending all appropriate meetings, conducting staff meetings, maintaining charts/statistics related to athlete referrals/visits and other duties as assigned by the Manager of Sports Medicine and/or the Practice Administrator.
Essential Job Functions
Performs basic direct patient care activities in an orthopedic surgeon's office or therapy setting. This includes, but is not limited to: rooming patients, history taking to include problem specific history, past medical history, past surgical history, medications, allergies, review of body systems, social history, patients current work status
Conduct initial brief physical assessment of involved extremity or body part. Application of cast and splints, removal of cast and splints, removal of sutures, completion of all applicable forms, arranging for durable medical equipment, applying therapeutic modalities, exercise instruction (pre and post-operative) for home and therapy-based exercises and gait training.
All of these functions are performed under the direction of the physician.
May provide "Athletic Training Services" to student athletes under the direction of the team physician or referring physician in accordance with Pennsylvania State Athletic Training Practice Act which is governed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine and State Board of Osteopathic Medicine for athletic event coverage for high school, college, club sport, or intramurals sporting events.
The athletic trainer will act as a liaison between the school community, parent, attending physician or specialist in referring student athlete for injury treatment. Athletic training services are defined to include the management and provision of care of injuries to a physically active person as defined in the state practice act with the direction of a licensed physician. The term includes the rendering of emergency care, development of injury prevention programs and providing appropriate preventative programs and protective devices for the physically active person. The term also includes the assessment, management, treatment, rehabilitation and recondition of the physically active person whose conditions are within the professional preparation and education of a certified athletic trainer. The term also includes the use of modalities such as mechanical stimulation, heat, cold, light, air, water, electricity, sound massage and the use of therapeutic exercises, reconditioning exercise and fitness programs. The certified trainer is expected to observe the domains of athletic training established by the NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association).

Perform traditional duties of athletic trainer as outlined by NATA-National Athletic Trainers Association Role Delineation study and the domains of athletic training
Required Qualifications
Completion of Bachelor's Degree in a Related Field
Completion of an accredited Certified Athletic Trainer Curriculum with a minimum of Bachelors of Science degree. May be masters trained.
Three (3) to five (5) years' of previous athletic training experience.
Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, and sound judgment.
Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous outpatient/physician office experience
Related training/experience (preferably within the past five to ten years) with collegiate athletics, including football
License, Certification & Clearances
Current licensure to practice in the State of Pennsylvania
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program.
Act 33 with renewal
Act 34 with renewal
Act 73 FBI Clearance
Valid Pennsylvania Driver's License (if out of state hire current Department of Motor Vehicle record report required and obtain PA Current Driver License within 30 days of hire).
Certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification and be licensed/certified as an athletic trainer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
Supervisory Responsibilities
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
Travel may be expected locally between Excela Health locations.
