This individual will be responsible for performing the daily husbandry aspects of all animals in compliance with GLP, USDA and AAALAC guidelines.

Please note the work schedule for this opening is either Tuesday-Saturday, or Sunday-Thursday. 7am to 3:30pm


  • Handles animals humanely.

  • Daily feeding of animals.

  • Washes and changing of animal cages.

  • Receives shipments of feed, bedding and other materials.

  • Disinfects laboratory daily.

  • Maintains Accurate Documentation of Logs

  • Scheduling

  • Lead Trainer

  • Animal Inventory Capacity

  • Updating SOPS

  • Proficiency checks for Animal Care Staff

  • Ordering Laboratory Supplies and maintain inventory

  • Trouble Shoot Auto Water System & Cage Wash Machine

  • Safety Committee Member


  • High Diploma or equivalent education preferred

  • Good Documentation Experience Preferred

  • MS Excel and Windows experience

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Must not have animal allergies to applicable species in this facility

  • Minimum 1 year experience

Primary Function: Provide for the care, evaluation, examination, treatment, feeding and handling of animals in accordance with established policies of the Society, as well as proper maintenance of the Animal Humane Society's facilities. Serve as a role model and point person for veterinary technicians and animal services staff and assist with staff training as needed. Essential Responsibilities: These duties are performed in addition to the duties of a Veterinary Technician: * Delegate responsibilities to veterinary technicians and animal services staff to ensure smooth work flow and efficient use of all scheduled staff. * Coordinate work assignments with animal services staff to move animals within the building as requested. Reassess workload and redirect work assignments as needed. * Perform daily ward checks to maintain cleanliness standards. * Assist Supervisor in training new employees, volunteers and community service staff. * Coordinate work assignments for community service staff and document their hours served. * Serve as point person for veterinary and animal services staff for questions and routine problems. * Provide regular communication and input to Supervisor to keep him/her informed about site situations, staff and volunteer concerns, continuing or developing employee performance issues, animal needs or issues, maintenance or supply needs, workload concerns etc. * Serve as role model for other animal services and veterinary technician staff demonstrating by personal example the desired standards of conduct and work performance and fostering an environment of cooperation and teamwork. * Work collaboratively and cooperatively with all staff to ensure smooth animal flow and campus operations. * Assist Supervisor in monitoring inventory and ordering of departmental supplies. * Act as a liaison between departments to ensure questions and concerns are addressed in a timely manner. * Provide feedback to supervisor about Veterinary Technicians and Animal Care staff during annual reviews. * Retrain existing personnel in challenge areas. * Work with AHS volunteers in a positive and effective way to facilitate meaningful volunteer engagement * Fulfill the duties of an Animal Technician when assigned. Additional Responsibilities: * Communicate task-related feedback and minor performance issues to the Animal Care and Veterinary Services staff. * Assist supervisor with preparation of department meetings and staff memos. * Prepare transport email and coordinate movement of animals between sites and special transports as needed. * Assist supervisor with scheduling as needed. * Assist staff veterinarian with examination of animals seized during a cruelty examination. * Weekly OSHA compliance checklist and correction. * Assist supervisor with Call Back/Hold for Reclaim phone calls. * Participate in daily rounds as assigned. Qualifications Required: * Certification as a Veterinary Technician preferred or minimum of one year of experience as a Veterinary Technician * Extensive knowledge of the day-to-day operations of the department * Valid driver's license with good driving record * Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written * Leadership abilities – collaborative, yet able to work independently * Problem solving and critical thinking skills * Ability to effectively handle and control incoming animals * Ability to handle complex and/or emotional situations * Ability to accurately evaluate the health and condition of animals * Strong verbal and written communication skills * Strong organizational and interpersonal skills * Capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing * Willingness to travel among all 5 shelter campuses as needed to provide adequate coverage * Able to work a flexible shift which includes evenings, weekends, and some holidays * Must be able to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of euthanasia. Work Environment: * Environment can be dirty, wet and humid * Exposure to unpleasant odors, loud noises and chemicals * Work requires restraining, lifting, and carrying animals and cages * Exposure to pests such as fleas and ticks * Possibility of being bitten or scratched * Job requires standing for long periods of time, bending, squatting, reaching, and heavy lifting This position description is intended to describe the general content and/or requirements for the performance of this job.
