Work Hours/Shift:

Full Time Days 40 Hours Per Week. 30 Minute Call required to include rotating weekends and holidays.

You Will Be Responsible For:

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

PERFORMS SUPPORTIVE PATIENT CARE FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in positioning, lifting, and restraining patients using appropriate safety precautions and body mechanics.

  • Informs the appropriate nurse of requests, problems or concerns relating to the patient or pertaining to the perioperative environment.

  • Provides for the patients' needs based upon such factors as diagnosis, age, and cultural background. Patient population includes patients of all ages from newborns through the geriatric population.

  • Assists anesthesiologist in setting up, and securing intravenous and/or intra-arterial lines pressure transducers.

  • Properly applies basic monitoring and assess proper functioning of the following: ECG, pulse

oximeter, automatic and manual blood pressure cuff, temperature probes, ETCO2 monitor, PNS monitors.

  • Operates OR bed controls.

  • Assembles IV, spinal and or epidural equipment.

  • Takes and records vital signs; reports findings or abnormalities to the nurse.

  • Assembles and delivers equipment and supplies for out of department procedures (e.g., MRI, radiology, litho, endo, etc.).

  • Aware of location of crash cart and able to initiate CPR.

PERFORMS ENVIRONMENTAL FUNCTIONS

  • Removes soiled instrumentation from the OR or other perioperative area and transports to Central Sterile Processing decontamination area.

  • Appropriately bags/disposes of contaminated linen and waste, labeling according to policy

MAINTAINS ANESTHESIA EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES

  • Provides anesthesia supplies (except medications) and equipment appropriate for the scheduled case.

  • Changes circuits and suction container and tubing between cases.

  • Cleans anesthesia equipment as appropriate when procedure is completed (including blood spills, etc.).

  • Calibrates, troubleshoots and provides routine maintenance and care of anesthesia equipment.

  • Identifies unsafe or defective instruments/equipment and implements appropriate corrective actions.

  • Maintains PAR levels for anesthesia related supplies (excluding medications) in all perioperative areas and in anesthesia work room.

  • Assists with inventory control of anesthesia products.

  • Properly maintains the following equipment: gas machines, lines set-ups, warming blankets or devices, endotracheal tubes, fiber optic equipment, pulse oximeter, and TEE probes and machine.

COMPLIES WITH HOSPITAL STANDARDS

  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information, including written, verbal, and observed.

  • Reviews hospital safety, infection control, risk management, and biohazardous waste programs annually and as indicated.

Qualifications

What You Will Need:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal instructions effectively.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:

  • Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Anesthesia Tech Certification obtained within six months of employment.

  • A minimum of six months experience in a perioperative setting preferred.

  • Previous mechanical and/or electrical skills preferred.

  • IV Certification

  • BLS/BCLS

Job Summary:

Performs specific tasks or routines supportive to delivery of patient care in the assigned unit under the direction of a Registered Nurse in accordance with standards.

  • The Anesthesia Tech Lead is responsible for assisting the supervision of the Anesthesia Technicians. This may include the following; attends Anesthesia section meetings, acting as liaison between the Anesthesia Techs. Oversees the implementation of new equipment, transition to new products/ processes, and facilitates necessary re-organization of OR supplies. Maintains active communication with Biomed for any equipment issues/PMs and updates and reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate personnel. Conducts training and new hire orientation of new team members. Coordinates the flow of supplies, equipment, and instruments between all Anesthesia sites, SPD, and the Anesthesia department and personnel. Assists Anesthesiologists and Nurse Anesthetists in the acquisition, preparation and application of equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia. Supervises and conducts tests, maintenance, operations, troubleshooting and cleaning of anesthesia equipment, and orders, stocks and maintains supplies and applicable medications. Serves as a resource person for other members of the Anesthesia, Surgery teams. Performs most functions independently, but more complex functions require direction from nursing or physicians.

Positioning the patient A. The surgeon shall convey the exact position that will give the best exposure for the surgical procedure. The surgical assistant will carry out this order. Consideration will be given to the patient's comfort and safety. B. Points of pressure shall be padded: elbows, heels, knees, eyes, face, and axillary region. C. Circulation shall not be impaired. (A tourniquet may be required for some procedures.) D. Nerve damage shall be guarded against. E. The temperature of the patient should be discussed with the anesthesia personnel and methods employed to maintain the desired temperature range. F. The surgical assistant shall be familiar with common positions related to the surgical procedure and will be able to use the equipment necessary to provide the position. Competencies will include the following: (1) Fracture tables (2) Head stabilizers (3) Body stabilizers (4) C-arm extensions (5) Any other equipment needed G. Upon completion of the procedure, the patient shall be evaluated for any possible damage from positioning which will include assessment of the skin. The abnormal condition shall be reported to the surgeon and treatment and documentation shall be carried out. 2. Providing visualization of the operative site by the following: A. Appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding. B. Packing with sponges C. Digital manipulation of tissue D. Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging E. Manipulation of suture materials (e.g., loops, tags, running sutures). F. Proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeon's view. 3. Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis. A. Permanent (1) Clamping and/or cauterizing vessels or tissue (2) Tying and/or ligating clamped vessels or tissue (3) Applying hemostatic clips (4) Placing local hemostatic agents B. Temporary (1) Applying tourniquets and demonstrating awareness of the indications/contraindications for use with knowledge of side effects of extended use. (2) Applying vessel loops (3) Applying non-crushing clamps (4) Applying direct digital pressure 4. Participating in volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques as appropriate. 5. Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes. A. Utilizing running or interrupted subcutaneous sutures with absorbable or non-absorbable material. B. Utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips. C. Closing skin with method indicated by surgeon (suture, staples, etc. D. Postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic agent as directed by the surgeon. 6. Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings, including the following: A. Liquid or spray occlusive materials B. Absorbent material affixed with tape or circumferential wrapping. C. Immobilizing dressing (soft or rigid) 7. Providing assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue 8. Performs operative shave prep, scrub, urinary catheterization, or other patient care tasks as assigned by the RN. 9. Anticipates the moves of the surgeon. 10. Prepares and maintains surgical area: * Proficient in scrubbing for all operative procedures within the scope of service * Setup of procedure/operating room with correct instrumentation and supplies for the scheduled case * Identifies unsafe or defective instrument/equipment and implements appropriate corrective action * Verifies completeness of instruments/sponge/needle count * Cleans instruments, equipment and room as appropriate when procedure is completed 11.
