WHAT YOU'LL DO IN THIS POSITION

Acting under the supervision of the Assistant Dean of Career Development, the Law School Career Advisor works with a team to provide innovative and comprehensive career planning, advising, and training services for law students. The Law School Career Advisor must know each of their assigned law students personally and work diligently with each student to maximize the student's career and leadership potential. The Law School Career Advisor models a commitment to excellence and leadership for students, helping to instill in them the highest ideals of the profession.

The Law School Career Advisor will also help cultivate, establish, and maintain an expansive nationwide professional network of high-quality employers in private legal practice, public interest legal services, and in industry and government who can be persuaded to hire graduates of the Law School. In addition, the Law School Career Advisor will support the implementation of an array of career and professional development programs and services. Some of the responsibilities of this role are:

  • Guide students in developing their career and leadership aspirations and then assist each student in reaching those aspirations.

  • Develop high-quality career opportunities for students.

  • Assist with creating and curating Career Development marketing, educational, and informational materials online and in print.

  • Assist with data collection and reporting of employment data, as well as preparing statistical reports.

  • Foster a professional and welcoming atmosphere for students, employers, and other guests of Career Development.

WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS ROLE?

Minimum:

  • Juris Doctor degree.

  • Three to five years of experience in a legal practice setting, legal recruiting, law school career services office, or other legal education setting.

Preferred: Management or leadership experience.

SKILLS, CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC.

  • Emotional intelligence to establish rapport with students from various backgrounds and with various viewpoints and experiences.

  • Ability to communicate to each student their worth and potential so clearly that they begin to see it in themselves.

  • Ability to convey excitement about the practice of law and the opportunities available for meaningful employment and leadership.

  • Demonstrated ability to address challenges using innovative solutions.

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to:

  • speak clearly and persuasively to groups of law students, alumni, and employers

  • establish strong working relationships with high quality private, public interest, and public employers and draw attention to the unique and outstanding legal education offered by the law school

  • write clearly and persuasively to prospective employers; and

  • communicate with various constituencies including alumni, J. Reuben Clark Law Society members, law school and university administration, faculty and staff, and members and friends of the Church to address questions about the employment market.

  • Ability to travel for employment-related recruiting trips and conferences.

  • Committed work ethic (steady work habits plus the ability to work hours outside regular business hours when necessary).

  • Ability to work closely with and gain the trust of law students in order to provide sound counsel about their employment goals and prospects.

  • Ability to collect, submit, and analyze employment data for employment-related surveys.

  • Ability to work well with employers, students, alumni, faculty members, and law school administrators in recruiting and career planning.

  • Ability to work within a team of Career Development employees.

  • Professional integrity and excellent judgment.

  • Sensitivity with confidential records and information.
