What You Will Be Doing

This position provides support to the Public Guardians and Guardians ad Litem through experienced administrative and communication skills combined with a strong work ethic.  The position provides case opening duties, letter drafting responsibilities, court calendaring duties, bank runs, vital statistics runs, processing discovery, and inputting and retrieving data from our various database systems.  The Palmer office also requires some receptionist duties which require managing difficult and complex situations when dealing with the public.

The Office of Public Advocacy (OPA) provides legal advocacy and guardianship services to vulnerable Alaskans.  The Public Guardian and Guardian ad Litem sections provide public guardianship services for incapacitated adults and advocate for abused and neglected children in protective proceedings.

We represent the best interests of children in a variety of civil legal proceedings, and we are tasked with helping the most vulnerable adults in Alaska to obtain benefits, housing, food, mental health and medical treatment.  OPA is a fast-paced work environment comprising individuals who care deeply about their responsibilities to the vulnerable wards and children to whom the Agency is appointed.

The Working Environment You Can Expect

The position will be split between the Anchorage Public Guardian Unit and the OPA Palmer Public Guardian and Guardian ad Litem office.  The Anchorage Unit is located in downtown Anchorage with parking paid for by the Agency.

The Palmer office is located on Dahlia Avenue with free parking provided. This position will support the Anchorage Unit three days per week and the Palmer office two days a week. The Public Guardian Unit and the Palmer office are fast-paced, detail oriented working environments and the offices work together as a team.  We pride ourselves on working hard and helping each other to achieve the best results possible for our clients while maintaining a congenial workplace.

PI01A2 - Law Office Assistant 2

One year of specific experience as a Law Office Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska;

OR

Successful completion of training under a formally established Law Office Assistant 1-2 flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska;

OR

One year of experience in a law office, or other administrative experience that includes the regular, proficient use of electronic management information systems and word processing and other standard business software applications for preparing, reviewing, or processing legal documents such as affidavits, court reports, demand letters, discovery requests or responses, entries of appearances, hearing transcripts, memoranda of advice/instruction, motions, legal opinions, subpoenas, and/or writs.

Substitutions:

A bachelor's degree in a legal field of study may substitute for the required experience.

An associate's degree or specific vocational-technical certification in a legal support career area (e.g., paralegal, Law Office Assistant, legal secretary, or criminal justice) may substitute for up to 6 months of the required experience.

Post-secondary education from an accredited college or university in a non-legal field of study may substitute for up to 6 months of the required experience (2.67 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month).

Vocational-Technical Certification in a generalized business support (e.g., administrative office technology, business and marketing management, entrepreneurship, or office assistance) career area may substitute for up to 3 months of the required experience.

NOTE: This position may be required to obtain a Notary Commission. Alaska Notary Law - Title 44, chapter 44.50.

APSIN

A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
