Holtzman Vogel is seeking an experienced Law Firm General Counsel to work in any of one of the following offices – Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Tallahassee or Phoenix. The Law Firm General Counsel will work closely with firm management and with attorneys to resolve professional ethics conflicts and other compliance issues related to the law firm, new business matters and lateral hires.
The individual will also work with practice group managers to handle intake and drafting of engagement letters for new clients and matters. The candidate will: Develop and maintain knowledge of legal ethics and professional responsibility rules related to lateral attorney and new matter conflicts of interest as well as relevant procedures, policies, and practices.
Advise Managing Partner of concerning internal or external matters, lateral attorney ethics issues and new matter conflicts of interest issues. Use Aderant conflicts platform and other resources to review situation-specific conflicts checks as needed. Handle the intake/onboarding process of new clients and matters including working with attorneys, practice managers, billing team and related software.
This also includes the drafting of standard and non-standard engagement letters. Provide advice to attorneys and others in connection with engagement letters, conflicts waivers, ethics walls, and firm policies. Prepare and deliver trainings for attorneys and staff on topics relevant to conflicts, ethics, and professional responsibility.
Provide support and legal guidance to Managing Partner and work on various projects. Requirements: Law degree from an accredited law school and active bar status in Virginia, Florida, DC or Arizona A minimum of three years’ relevant experience practicing law, as a law firm general counsel and/or working as a lead conflicts attorney in a national law firm setting preferred Experience in legal ethics rules and their application in a law firm practice Excellent professional interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the firm, as well as outside of the firm. Ability to understand how small details can be of critical importance Ability to work independently and in a team environment with a customer-service focus Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information Ability to manage time well and prioritize effectively Ability to analyze problems and develop alternative strategies
