Law Enforcement Sergeant

$95,562.58 Annually - $112,455.03 annually depending on years of service

Qualifying for Prior Service Credit (for pay)

Candidates with full-time paid Law Enforcement (LEO), Basic Correctional Officer (BCO) and/or Special Functions Officer (SFO) experience with any local, state or federal agency will be given one (1) year of pay credit for every (1) year of full-time paid employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be currently Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) certified.

Candidates must have earned the rank of a LEO Sergeant (or higher), with any local, state or federal agency.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive. The omission of specific duties and responsibilities will not preclude it from the position.

Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Supervises the work of assigned staff. Monitors, evaluates, assess, corrects and trains assigned staff in their duties and responsibilities.

  • Prepares bid schedules, holds shift briefings, and coordinates priorities for work and staffing level of unit with other units.

  • Supervises emergency response to serious incidents and directs and coordinates staff. Conducts preliminary investigations into alleged employee misconduct.

  • Performs research and writes administrative changes or modifications in policies or operating procedures.

  • Prepares reports on security breaches, use of force issues, and recommends corrective action for either staff or operating procedures.

  • Responds to complaints and grievances. Resolves problems with staff members, work procedures, security issues, accidents and illness.

  • Creates security and staffing plans for handling potentially volatile or dangerous situations.

  • Monitors operations in public buildings, contracted courts and facilities, and security areas.

  • Performs the functions of a Peace Officer within the scope of duty to prevent, detect and/or apprehend persons involved in criminal activity and perform all other law enforcement duties statutorily imposed.

  • Performs Deputy I functions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA) Knowledge of:

  • Security techniques

  • Law enforcement techniques and practices

  • County and city ordinances

  • Investigation techniques

  • Protect Services policies and practices

  • Supervisory principles and practices

  • City, County, State and Federal laws and/or Ordinances related to security and criminal procedures; including civil rights, the criminal justice system, evidence collection and policy liability

  • Blood borne pathogen regulations and universal safety precautions sufficient to be able to protect oneself and others

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Supervise and train on safety issues or practices

  • Develop, modify, prioritize, and schedule work plans, methods, and Analyze information, document investigations, and bring cases to conclusion

  • Basic math skills

  • Drive law enforcement vehicles including emergency vehicle operation

  • Use of lethal and less lethal weapons

  • Defensive tactics and arrest control procedures

  • Maintain qualifications on required weapons

  • Review work for accuracy and completeness

  • Supervise and train others

  • Respond effectively in emergency or stressful situations

  • Use computers and software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Prepare written documentation, clearly express ideas, and utilize correct grammatical

  • Communicate clearly and concisely to elicit and/or present explanatory or interpretive information

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, organizations and the public, in emergency and other situations

  • Operate law enforcement communications and emergency equipment

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Physically subdue violent persons/prisoners and/or chase persons/prisoners on foot to apprehend them to take into custody

  • Wear body armor and carry duty weapons and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs

  • Apply a continuum of force when necessary to apprehend or control a person

  • Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time

  • Operating assigned equipment and vehicles

  • Climbing stairs, ladders

  • Balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching

  • Reaching, grasping, holding, performing repetitive motions

  • Chasing and subduing suspects

  • Moving injured persons to a safe location

  • Lifting or lowering an object up to 25 lbs

  • Pushing or pulling with enough force to open cell doors

  • Maintaining surveillance for long periods of time

  • Working in extreme weather conditions

  • Risk of exposure to infections, contagious diseases, blood borne pathogens, and body fluids

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION

This is the first level of command in the Deputy I series requiring detailed knowledge of the activities, policies, programs, and operations of assigned work units in order to independently address administrative and technical issues as they arise.

This class is distinguished from the Lieutenant or Captain classifications by the latter's responsibility to serve as second or first in command in a large unit or to manage the operations of a specialized unit.

Incumbents in this position require the following:

  • Maintain annual in-service training requirements and work any shifts and/or extended shifts

  • Maintain fitness level commensurate with physical requirements of position
