MISSION:

JOB PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, supervises Corporals who are responsible for first line supervision of the Public Safety Officers, enforce State and Department policies, rules and regulations for the protection and security of youth, staff, visitors, and property of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. Serves as the Shift Supervisor in the absence of the Corporal.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conducts routine checks and surveillances of buildings and grounds to ensure safety and security procedures are adhered to.

Patrols Department property.

Searches for and apprehends AWOLS, assists units in controlling youth disturbances; and ensures property notification are made to management.

Supervises, assigns tasks, and duties to subordinates routinely and as situations dictate.

Conducts staff appraisals and counsels with employees as appropriate.

Ensures that officers obtain required training.

Prepares schedules to ensure adequate coverage.

Prepares, reviews, approves shift reports, and other records.

Operates communication network and vehicles.

Ensures that vehicles and equipment are properly maintained.

Transports youth as deemed necessary.

Investigates escapes and vehicle accidents occurring on Department property.

Conducts other investigations such as drugs, theft, contraband and youth abuse.

May be placed in charge of a shift in the absence of a supervisor.

Performs other related job duties deemed necessary by the Director of public Safety and/or the Inspector General.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to prepare reports.

Ability to prioritize multiple competing priorities during high-stress situations.

Perform general police work such as maintaining order during emergencies, participating in vehicle and employee searches, and being on alert for suspicious activities, drugs, theft, contraband, and juvenile abuse.

Patrol assigned areas to prevent crime and detect violations of law.

Respond to complaints, reports of violations, and requests for assistance.

Investigate traffic collisions.

Escort unruly visitors off campus.

Perform emergency and routine juvenile transport.

Provide a safe environment for youth, visitor(s), and employee(s) of DJJ.

Work under general supervision while using judgment to proceed in routine matters in accordance with standard practices.

Annual scheduled performance review supervised by the Director of Public Safety via reports, scheduled meetings, and personal contacts.

On-call for emergencies 24 hours per day.

Essential Position: The candidate should possess high morals, and character, someone stable and natural, and be able to withstand a background investigation.

Must be able to work with aggressive delinquent youth daily in accordance with SCDJJ Policies and Procedures.

Must be able to lift 50+ lbs., sit 1-3 hours per day: stand 1-3 hours per day, walk 1-3 hours per day, and ability to work varied hours to meet organizational needs.

Deal with confidential and sensitive information.

Ability to prioritize multiple competing priorities during high-stress situations and ability to occasionally travel overnight.

This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youths within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The employee may have direct and direct contact with youths within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma and 3 years of experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. SCCJA Certified class 1 Law Enforcement Officer.

Salary may vary depending on experience and qualifications. Candidates must present documentation of their attainment of a college degree(s) at the time of the interview.

Documentation must be an official or unofficial copy of the college transcript or a Letter of Verification of Degree from the institution's Registrar's Office. If the candidate selected for the position provided an unofficial copy, it must be replaced with an official copy on or before the HR processing date.
