Law Enforcement Deputy  

$67,162.07 Annually - $98,190.55 annually depending on years of service

Qualifying for Prior Service Credit (for pay)

Candidates with full-time paid Law Enforcement (LEO), Basic Correctional Officer (BCO) and/or Special Functions Officer (SFO) experience with any local, state or federal agency will be given one (1) year of pay credit for every (1) year of full-time paid employment.

Performs a wide variety of law enforcement functions, including but not limited to: Crime suppression, crime prevention, protection of personal liberties, regulation of non-criminal conduct, and provision of services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be currently Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) certified.Candidates must meet all of the following minimum qualifications:◊ Must be a resident of the State of Utah at the time of hire◊ Must possess a valid Utah Driver's license at time of hire◊ Must be free of any physical, emotional, or mental condition that would prevent anapplicant from performing the essential functions of a Deputy position.◊ Must be POST certified as a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) and have worked full-time for aminimum of one year as a LEO for a municipality, county, state or federal agency.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Responds to calls for service, assists other officers at the direction of supervisory personnel.

  • Suppresses crime through identification and apprehension of criminals.

  • Regulates non-criminal conduct such as traffic control, crowd control, and social relations.

  • Reports to the scene of traffic collisions and investigates the causes and results.

  • Secures the scene of crime, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, identifies witnesses, and makes arrests.

  • Compiles and prepares required information and evidence to assist in the prosecution of criminal cases; to include testifying as a witness in court.

  • Attends regular training classes in police methods.

  • Prepares thorough and complete reports of investigations and daily activity.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of criminal and traffic law.

  • Successfully completes a minimum of 40 hours annual in-service training that meets or surpasses the minimum standards.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Pursues fleeing suspects requiring ability to quickly enter and exit patrol vehicle, climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles, jumping down or over elevated surfaces, climbing through openings, crawling in confined spaces, and using their body to gain entrance through barriers.

  • Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergency and disaster situations including rendering medical aid, dragging, or carrying people away from danger, securing and evacuating people from areas, houses, and objects where danger exists.

  • Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift medium to heavy objects/people. Difficult working positions. Must stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, or sit uncomfortably for extended periods. Moderate exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease.

  • Exposure to hostile, life-threatening situations, hazardous chemicals, man-made and natural disasters, and communicable diseases.

  • May be required to use physical force to include deadly force in course of assigned duties.

  • Considerable exposure to stressful situations as a result of human behavior. In field operations, exposure to stress as well as occupational hazards is of considerable magnitude.

  • Ability to recall and respond to critical incidents as required. Willingness and ability to work overtime as workload dictates.

  • Climbing stairs and ladders.

  • Safely operating firearms.

  • Working in extreme weather conditions.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION

May be required to physically subdue violent persons/prisoners and/or chase persons/prisoners on foot to apprehend them to take into custody.

Must wear body armor and carry duty weapons and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.

Must submit to random drug and alcohol testing during employment.

Must work rotating shifts and assignments and is subject to call out 24 hours a day.
