Nebraska Supreme Court Judge Jonathan J. Papik is currently accepting applications for a full-time term Law Clerk for the 2023/2024 term.
This at-will position involves highly responsible legal work. The attorney in this position directly assists a Supreme Court justice or Court of Appeals judge with case specific duties. Law clerks are hired at the discretion of the justice or judge.
The attorney is under the exclusive supervision of the justice or judge by whom the attorney is hired, and is an at-will employee. Examples of Work
Typical examples of work: Prepares bench briefs on upcoming cases.
Reviews the complete record in assigned cases.
Researches the law germane to the appeals under submission. Prepares legal memoranda, synthesizing factual analysis and legal research. Performs other tasks as directed by the justice or judge.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an American Bar Association approved law school and admission to the Nebraska State Bar Association, or eligibility therefore.
Required Documents: Must attach a cover letter, resume, grade transcript, letters of recommendation, and a writing sample.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and practices of legal research, including the use of Westlaw and LOIS. Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and precedents concerned in difficult and complex cases.
Ability to organize and lay out printed material. Ability to digest and abstract studies and opinions.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Skills in word processing.
