The Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy (DPA) is nationally recognized as a model statewide public defender system with an exceptional training and education program. Our defense teams ensure the criminal justice process is fair, results are just, and individual liberties are protected.

We are hiring a Law Clerk to assist the criminal defense team in the Glasgow Trial Office. Kentucky DPA looks for individuals who have demonstrated a desire to help the most vulnerable in their communities.

The ideal candidate recently completed all coursework at an American Bar Association accredited law school to receive a Juris Doctor degree and plans to take the next available bar exam or has recently received their license to practice law. This individual exhibits exceptional planning and organizational skills, is self-directed and comfortable working with their defense team which includes attorneys, investigators, alternative sentencing workers and office administrative staff. We seek to hire persons who understand it is a privilege to represent our clients and we do so on behalf of the people of Kentucky.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Clerks assist attorneys representing defendants by providing support such as legal research and writing.

  • Interviewing clients and other duties as required.

  • Duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings.

  • Travel is required.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree and a minor in paralegal studies OR completion of a two-year program in paralegal studies OR completion of twenty-four semester hours at an American Bar Association accredited law school.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience as a paralegal or legal secretary will substitute for the required two-year paralegal studies program on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE

Working Conditions

Incumbents working in this job title primarily perform duties in an office setting. Minimal travel may be required.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.

The Office Clerk will field calls from customers and work to resolve problems they raise concerning service or billing. Some of the AP/Billing duties will include - processing vendor invoices/checks and coding to the appropriate GL accounts. Will maintain filing system of processed AP invoices. Will ensure statements are sent in a timely manner with a high level of accuracy.</p><p>Job Duties:</p><ul><li><p>Talks with customers by phone or in person and receives orders for installation, turn on, discontinuance, or change in service.</p></li><li><p>Effectively communicate issues, needs, and opportunities with customer service employees and other managers &amp; solicits sale of new or additional services.</p></li><li><p>Fills out contract forms, determines charges for service requested, collects deposits, prepares change of address records, and issues discontinuance orders.</p></li><li><p>Take payments, bank deposits, key word orders, keys production paperwork and general office duties</p></li><li><p>Adjusts complaints concerning billing or service rendered, referring complaints of service failures to designated departments for investigation.</p></li><li><p>Reconcile revenue figures and aging's with legacy reports.</p></li><li><p>Work with other departments to ensure correct billing.</p></li><li><p>Perform bi-weekly reports to prepare accounts for billing. Will analyze the data and make corrections as needed.</p></li><li><p>Verifying, coding, and keying invoices.</p></li><li><p>Updating the Purchase Order Log.</p></li><li><p>Verifying and reconciling p-card transactions.</p></li><li><p>Delivers services to customers in a manner that promotes goodwill. Interacts with customers and Waste Connections employees to determine service requirements, resolve problems or complaints, and seeks cost-effective, safe environmentally sound solutions to service issues.</p></li></ul><p>Requirements:</p><ul><li><p>2 years of Customer Service experience in a high call volume atmosphere preferred.</p></li><li><p>High school diploma or equivalent preferred.</p></li><li><p>Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, E-Mail, proficient in 10 key, and typing skills a must.</p></li><li><p>Excellent verbal communications skills.</p></li></ul><p>Successful candidates are those who seek to thrive in an environment of operational excellence and accountability.
