Responsibilities

Works independently with both internal and external customers and with technical support, as a technical authority, consultant, primary investigator, or project leader. May lead or organize technical efforts or project teams.

Interfaces between customers and Aerospace technical and management staff. May mentor less experienced Members of Technical Staff (MTS) and serve as role model. Responsible to lead systems engineering, VAFB infrastructure, and launch verification support for the Western Range. Support will be spread across SMC, 30th SW, NRO, and MDA.

The selected candidate will demonstrate the following characteristics:

Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to establish / sustain excellent working relationships with the Air Force, NRO, MDA and AFNWC customers, Aerospace and contractor personnel

Ability to coordinate resources not under direct management

Key Functions
Normally responsible for (a) a specific project element (e.g., a payload, spacecraft subsystem, or software package) and associated interfaces; (b) a specific engineering discipline (e.g., fracture analysis, circuit design); (c) a program of system aspect that crosses technical boundaries (e.g., mission analysis, technical design/evaluation, on-orbit operations). In systems engineering assignments, independently services a number of project segments and/or smaller program/project efforts.
Provide support and close coordination as a subject matter expert for the GN2 plant on Vandenberg. The GN2 plant is a critical launch asset and Aerospace is responsible for overseeing engineering changes, contract negotiations, deep technical knowledge of its operation, and long term trending of use and cathodic protection.
Support to MDA customers for technical reviews including but not limited to, payload mission reviews, Interceptor/Target Assessments, Pedigree Reviews, Test Assessments, Data Relay Projects, and Quality/Safety/Mission Assurance.
Provide direct support to the NRO for special studies and system safety analysis.
Provide direct support of the SMC EELV program responsible for SV interface verification and monitoring critical operations
Evaluate out of position work, out of sequence work and dispositions of non-conformances to assess the impact on mission risk and to provide recommendations to reduce risk.
Maintain relationships with a diverse Aerospace staff (scattered throughout the company) and achieve responsiveness to customer rapid response taking.
Communicate effectively with customer, contractor, and Aerospace management.
Maintain security compliance and promotion of safety, security, and environmental awareness within the WRD.

Qualifications

Required
Bachelors degree in Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Science, Math or related technical field
8 years of progressive experience that includes experience in MDA interceptor and target vehicle operations and/or flight system design, build, assembly, integration and test
Experience in product assurance, mission assurance and manufacturing for flight and ground systems
Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with customers
Work experience in matrixed staff organizations with project lead or management experience
Ability to communicate effectively with senior customer, contractor and Aerospace management
Familiarity with MDA, SMC, NASA, industry, Mission Assurance standards
Occasional travel is required
Ability to support off shift requirements as needed
Current Secret Clearance

Preferred
Top Secret with SSBI
Advanced degree preferred in Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
Broad internal recognition from peers and Aerospace program office
Broad technical/programmatic impact inside and outside of Aerospace

The LSSE provides technical analysis of hazards associated with spacecraft design, aerospace ground support equipment/hardware, and facilities and processing for the Office of Space Launch (OSL). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: * Ensures implementation of applicable Space Wing range safety requirements for SV programs, support equipment/hardware and facilities * Reviews and assesses Operations & Maintenance facilities and equipment work authorization requests (i.e. engineering change requests, preliminary project reviews, etc.) * Reviews and assesses safety data packages produced by the satellite vehicle or facility contractors. * Reviews and assesses procedures and plans for SV programs, launch vehicle integration, and Operations & Maintenance and other support contractors as applicable. * Participates in/develops tailoring of safety requirements documents per AFSPCMAN 91- 710 (or contract equivalent). * Conducts/supports facility readiness walk-downs prior to SV program arrival and propellant operations. * Reviews and assesses program/support contractor explosive procedures and site plans. * Attend and participate in preliminary design reviews (PDR,) critical design reviews, (CDR,) ground operations working groups, (GOWGs,) ground operations readiness reviews, (GORR), technical interchange meetings (TIM), Splinter groups, etc....in evaluation of system safety requirements for large missile, space vehicle, rocket, payload, spacecraft, pre-launch, launch, post-launch/range operations and/or recovery operations. * System safety hazards analysis, design, or research/development testing of ( 1) Ordnance (2) Explosives, (3) other types of munitions, (4) pyrotechnics (5) cryogenic, (6) toxic/hypergolic propellants, (7) high pressure (HP) gases, (8) radioactive materials, or (9) Other hazardous systems/components * Preparation and/or review and approval of hazardous processing procedures * Safety monitoring of hazardous operations Position Requirements: * Bachelor's Degree in a STEM Field and 8 years relevant experience or an additional 4 years relevant experience in lieu of the Degree. * Be a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Professional Engineer (PE) * Familiarity with Space Vehicle (SV) System Safety design as well as the customers Safety Review Team process * Working knowledge of range safety requirements EWR 127-1 or 91-710 * Knowledge of Nuclear safety and/or ionizing/non-ionizing radiation * Experience working in an integrated contracting environment/team Security Requirements: * Must possess an active TS/SCI w/ CI Poly Qualifications Requires Bachelor's degree or equivalent, and seven to nine years of related experience.
