A Police Officer performs a wide variety of duties connected with general police work including investigation and general enforcement of laws and ordinances in the City of Superior, in addition to advancing the mission of the Superior Police Department. A Lateral Transfer Police Officer must have one year of full-time law enforcement experience and be eligible to become a Certified Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer prior to hire.
Upon hire, a Lateral Transfer Police Officer will be credited with their years of full-time law enforcement for the purposes of wage placement, vacation accrual, and minimum experience for Detective application. The Lateral Transfer Police Officer must successfully complete 14 weeks of on-the-job field training, in addition to passing a 12 month probationary period.

Work Schedule: Patrol Officers currently work 12 hour shifts, 4 days on - 4 days off (built in overtime included).

Employment Standards
Knowledges:Working knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement; laws and ordinances governing local law enforcement; first aid; and geography of the City of Superior and surrounding area. Some knowledge of court proceedings and proper investigative practices.
Abilities:Ability to successfully complete a 14 week on-the job field training program; prepare clear and concise reports; operate a computer; speak clearly and effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department personnel and the general public; provide credible testimony in a court of law; use a firearm and other equipment; drive a police vehicle; work under adverse weather conditions; work varied shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; and use good judgment, integrity and tact.
Requirements/Special Requirements
Must be a U.S. citizen. Must have no serious criminal convictions.
Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire. Must have earned a high school diploma or GED, and have completed 60 accredited semester credits/units of college. Must have accurate color vision.
Must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/200 in each eye corrected to 20/20 vision in one eye and not worse than 20/40 vision in the other eye. A satisfactory history of soft contact lens wear for more than one year with vision corrected to 20/20 in one eye and no worse than 20/40 in the other eye, is also accepted.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
License Requirement: Must become certified as a State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer prior to hire and maintain such certification.
Driver License Requirement:Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Residency Requirement:Must reside and maintain principal residence within a forty-five minute driving time to the corporate limits of the City of Superior within 6 months of completion of probationary period (per City policy).
Background Investigation:Must pass a background investigation prior to hire.
Post Job Offer Psychological Examination and Medical Examination Requirement:Must pass a psychological exam, a medical exam and a drug screen for the position prior to hire.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
WRITTEN EXAM "The National Police Officer Selection Test" (POST):
Lateral Transfer candidates will not be required to take the written exam.
PHYSICAL READINESS TEST & INTERVIEW:
We will be giving the Law Enforcement Academy Physical Readiness Test (PRT) to you here in Superior. You will be required to pass the Exit Standards test.This is the same test that candidates are required to pass at the end of the recruit academy.

You must pass an oral exam and a physical readiness test to be placed on the eligible list. Veteran's Preference points will be assigned prior to calculating the final score for ranking on the eligible list.
Lateral transfer applicants will be placed on the certified list if there is less than five certified WI law enforcement officers on the current certified list. Following these tests, candidates on the certified hire list must complete and pass a background investigation to be considered for appointment. Finally, candidates must pass a psychological examination, post job offer medical examination and drug screen to receive a probationary appointment.
The eligible list established through this process will be used for filling vacancies for a two year period from the date the list is established. The list can be extended up to 3 years by the Police and Fire Commission.
