Position Details

Organizational Unit

This position reports to the Library Operations Manager, Access Services and serves as the overnight supervisor for the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, working the 5pm to 2am shift, Mondays thru Thursdays and Sundays, 1pm to 9pm shift. Facilitates access to library materials and resources through public service as well as administrative functions for other library services.

This position includes the recruiting, supervising, coaching and scheduling of up to 4 late night student assistants and up to two full time library late night Library Specialists. In absence of the Operations Manager, this position acts as the primary point of contact for Library Administration, the University Community and general public patrons.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Essential duties for the Library Operations Supervisor involve focus on the following areas: ensuring the library building is a secure place for study and research, remaining alert at all hours, surveying the building main entrance and egresses and ensuring all patron complaints and incidents are resolved during the late-night shift. Will work collaboratively with the CSO officer to make decisions on when to elevate patron incidents and reach out to UPD for resolution when needed.

Responds to patron concerns and makes autonomous decisions on de-escalating patron issues when necessary, interpreting library and university policies and established procedures. Serves as point of contact for building maintenance concerns during the evening hours and reports building maintenance issues, including door access issues and card swipe issues in a timely manner. Reviews established security procedures and works with Access Services dept manager to update security manual when needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serves as supervisor on site during evening hours, making autonomous decisions regarding building operations, resolving patron concerns in consultation with CSO officer, and elevates incidents to UPD or library Admin when appropriate

  • Provides recommendations to CSO officer regarding whether patrons causing disruptions to business operations should be trespassed

  • Makes decisions on how to act appropriately when patrons are in violation of dept procedures, USF Library guidelines and University policies

  • Ensures closing procedures are performed correctly, including early shutdown of floors 2 and 3 at midnight during Fall and Spring and at 10 pm during the Summer. Verifies that office spaces are secure and egresses are locked up appropriately. At 2 am, ensures all patrons have vacated premises before securing building and closing down service desk.

  • Maintains open communications with Access Services Dept manager and library admin, keeping manager in the know regarding day-to-day decision making and patron incidents

  • Supervises, recruits, and trains late night Access Services FWS / TSE student assistants, delegating assignments to students to perform the following duties: answer questions at the services desk, re-shelve books, newspapers, and periodicals and assist with shifting and shelf reading the collections.

  • Mentors students to perform the following duties: sort and distribute incoming mail for NPML library, receive newspapers and print journals, maintain newspaper check-in log for incoming newspaper receipts (five newspapers). Reports non delivery or skipped issues to Collection Development & Tech Services unit. Receives new library books and standing orders, checking that books received match packing slip/invoice.

  • Participates in library stacks maintenance projects, which include determining the appropriate level for shelf setting and meeting accessibility standards, shelf measuring procedures, keeping range guide signage updated, coordinating shifting and assisting with weeding initiatives.

  • Exhibits proficiency in the Library of Congress Classification and Dewey Decimal system.

  • Reports monthly statistics for Uborrow requests and Evening patron count

  • Participates in mandatory university training, including FWS Supervisor training, Active Shooter training, OASIS/BANNER training and maintains technical proficiency in ALMA, UBORROW, and ILLIAD.

  • Provides excellent customer service at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library Services Desk, acting as point of contact for Library Service desk questions and resolving patron inquiries

  • Perform work that is accurate in scope and demonstrate attentiveness with Uborrow requests, performing annual asset management inventory, conducting searches for lost Uborrow books, and ensure library materials are re-shelved properly

Supervisory Responsibilities

Job/Position Titles of Direct Reports: OPS & FWSP - Supervises late night students, ensuring shifts are covered and updating Access Services calendar for scheduling updates. Works with Late Night Library Specialist and CSO officer, to ensure closing procedures are performed appropriately.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree preferred. 5 years paraprofessional library experience preferred or equivalent customer service experience.

Supervisory experience or experience overseeing student workers including staff training. Experience in policy and procedure development. Experience with Integrated Library Systems (ILS) - Circulation module, including ability to troubleshoot between ILS and University business application systems (i.e. GEMS, FAST and Banner) preferred.

Additional Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to work Sundays

Compensation:

Compensation commensurate with experience.

Salary Range: $38,916 to $41,329
