Job Description:
Lake Area Technical College is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Heavy Equipment/CDL Instructor to join our dynamic team. This full-time position will have duties split between instructing in the Heavy Equipment program and working with the Corporate Education department to deliver CDL training. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of heavy equipment operations and maintenance, coupled with the ability to effectively teach and mentor students.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Heavy Equipment Instruction
Develop and deliver comprehensive curriculum covering heavy equipment operations, including inspection, maintenance, as well as site surveying.
Provide practical instruction in excavating, digging, ditching, backfilling, site and road grading, and using various heavy machinery such as track type tractors, motor graders, scrapers, excavators, skid steer loaders, and cranes.
Monitor and ensure adherence to safety procedures during student operation of equipment and overall lab activities. Supervise lab activities, maintain inventory, and manage equipment.
Work closely with other department's instructors to foster a cohesive and effective teaching environment.
Assist with student recruitment, campus-wide events, public relations, and promoting the Heavy Equipment program. Serve as a positive role model and develop industry connections.
Attend and contribute to advisory boards to guide the direction of the HEO program.
CDL Instruction
Provide instruction for obtaining Commercial Driver's License Class A & Class B. Ensure training meets Department of Transportation standards.
Maintain a safe learning environment and oversee the maintenance of trucks. Coordinate DOT inspections.
Work in partnership with other departments to maintain and effective teaching team.
Develop innovative curriculum using simulation software, learning management systems, and other technology tools.
Attend and contribute to advisory boards to guide the direction of the CDL program.
Assist with promoting Lake Area Technical College's CDL program and recruit potential students.
Maintain inventory and related documentation.
REPORTS TO: Department Supervisor, Director of Corporate Education, Dean of Academics, Vice President
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of three years of experience as a heavy equipment operator.
Extensive knowledge of the trucking industry with a minimum of three years' experience.
Extensive knowledge of heavy equipment operations and maintenance, survey; experience with GPS equipment is a plus.
Commercial Driver's License Class A - Manual required; additional endorsements preferred.
Accident-free driving record with no violations.
Prior teaching and curriculum development experience is a plus.
Computer literate with knowledge of heavy equipment software, simulation software, learning management systems, and Microsoft Office programs.
Excellent interpersonal skills with an affinity for working with young adults, coworkers, and the public.
Bilingual abilities are a plus.
National Career Readiness Certificate Level Silver or higher is a plus.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
205-day contract. Position starts in August 2024. Salary and benefits set by Watertown Board of Education in accordance with the state postsecondary technical instructor salary formula.
