We have an exciting opportunity for a Laser Technician to join our Laser and Optical Engineering team located in Rancho Bernardo, CA. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the assembly, installation, operation, data acquisition and documentation of optic and/or laser systems. Provides support to engineers and scientists. Sets up and conducts routine and non-routine experiments, tests and assemblies.


  • Maintains systems; implements modifications and engineering changes in the assembly installation, and operation of systems.

  • Maintain developmental laser/optical laboratory and supports duties such as cleaning and organizing hardware.

  • Execute well-defined laser/optical test activities utilizing common laser test equipment.

  • Support the build and integration of opto-mechanical assemblies for developmental laser systems.

  • Operates and maintains supporting equipment necessary for the operation of large scale laser systems, including chillers, power supplies, flow systems and interlocks.

  • Operates equipment to perform tests, troubleshooting and repair of systems.

  • Performs experiment, test or assembly based on sketches, schematics, blueprints, drawings, and other engineering documentation.

  • Records and reports experimental or test data, observing data for anomalies, preparing summaries of data via written tabulations, charts, graphs, and reports as necessary.

  • May provide technical assistance to lower level technicians in work area.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires an associate's degree in a related technical field and nine or more years of laser and/or optics experience. Equivalent professional experience and/or trade school certification may be substituted in lieu of education.

  • The ideal candidate should have demonstrated experience in the operation of large scale laser systems.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.

  • Must demonstrate full working knowledge of laser and optics systems and have a basic technical understanding of principles for their operation.

  • Must possess: (1) the ability to grasp new concepts quickly and work with general supervision; (2) the ability to read and interpret sketches, schematics, blueprints, drawings and other engineering documentation; (3) the ability to use basic laboratory equipment; (4) the ability to identify problems, and collect and analyze data; (5) good analytical, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to accurately document, report, and assess situations; and (6) good knowledge of computer operations and applications pertinent to the field.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours as required.

  • Must be able and willing to travel as needed.

Basic Qualifications: * 10+ years of experience with directed energy * 5+ years of experience with leading engineering teams as a technical lead or team lead * Experience with managing others as a technical lead, team lead, or similar lead role involving applied system engineering and analysis and interfacing with multiple disciplines * Experience with designing, building, conducting, and analyzing the results of developmental laser hardware and experiments * Knowledge of the theory and experimental implementation and use of laser or electro-optic (EO) components and techniques, including diode laser pumping, laser resonators, fiber optics, beam combining, high damage threshold optics, and laser thermal management * Ability to design experiments to validate physics and engineering models of laser and electro-optic systems and maintain laser or EO experiments, minimizing risks to laboratory personnel and equipment and employing laboratory diagnostics * Ability to collect, analyze, and report data to validate phenomenological and application models and improve, modify, or extend experiments * Ability to obtain a security clearance * BS degree in Physics or Optical Engineering or EE Additional Qualifications: * Experience with developing computer models to predict the performance of experimental laser and EO system concepts and civil and military applications of these systems * Experience with modeling and simulation of EO systems * Experience with data analysis for directed energy weapon systems or sensor systems * Experience with laboratory or field testing * Knowledge of the physics and operation of a variety of lasers, including fiber lasers and photonic crystal fiber lasers * Knowledge of optical, infrared, or multi-spectral sensors or systems, resolution, sensitivity, frequency response, dynamic range, and noise characteristics, applied and environmental physics, including radiometry, propagation, attenuation, absorption, performance factors, and polarization and their effects across the spectrum, and signal or image processing techniques * Secret clearance * MS degree or higher preferred Clearance: Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
