The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking qualified applicants for a Laser Safety Officer. EH&S assists the campus community in maintaining compliance with applicable environmental health and safety regulations, preventing illness and injury, and protecting the environment. EHS delivers effective education, fosters beneficial partnerships, maintains technical expertise, and provides exemplary service.

This role involves developing and maintaining the OSU EHS Laser compliance program to ensure safety for employees working with lasers across all OSU campuses. Responsibilities include conducting inspections/audits and establishing controls for laser operations.

The Laser Safety Officer (LSO) oversees various aspects such as laser characteristics, hazards, standards, control methods, and procedures. Additionally, the LSO may handle tasks like laser classification, evaluating exposure limits, approving SOPs, recommending protective gear, specifying warning signs, and providing consultation services. This role extends support to various other EHS initiatives.

In addition to overseeing laser safety, the LSO also contributes to multiple EHS programs such as lab safety, training, data analysis, audits, the non-medical x-ray program, and the handling of radioactive materials. The LSO will offer technical guidance to university laboratories, providing additional support to laboratory safety and radiation safety as needed.

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety operating hours are from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Position will require participation in the medical surveillance program. Participate in emergency response as part of the Radiation Safety Emergency Response Team.

Will require success completion of a criminal background check and the individual must successfully complete within 90 days of employment the Trustworthy and Reliable process for access to areas of increased controls.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Health and Safety, Health Physics, Physics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience. 4 year(s) experience a Laser Safety Officer or equivalent combination of education, technical expertise with lasers and general compliance required.

Preferred: Advanced degree in relevant field may be desirable. 4-8 years of relevant experience preferred. Firm understanding of performing laser/LED calculations (MPE, NOHD, NHZ, OD.) for various laser/LED types and configurations; experience performing research laboratory audits; experience in implementation of compliance activities and knowledge of state and federal safety regulations for research laboratories required including ANSI Z136 series, OSHA (Occupations Safety & Health Administration), BMBL (Biosafety in Microbiological & Biomedical Laboratories), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and the Ohio Department of Health.

Advanced degree in relevant field may be desirable. 4-8 years of relevant experience preferred.
