Position Scope:

Our Medical Components business, a leading supplier of micro machining components, nickel titanium and precious metal parts, and other advanced components for the Medical Device Industry, has an exciting opportunity for a Laser Applications Engineer.

This position is responsible for developing and manufacturing new products, scale-up of development to production, as well as optimizing existing production product on CNC laser machines. Close collaboration with production, engineering, and quality staff critical for meeting on time delivery goals and producing conforming parts.

Key responsibilities:

  • Responsible for completing laser development jobs on time and in full including but not limited to tooling, CAD/CAM modeling and programming, manual programming, manufacturing, cleaning, and inspection.

  • Responsible for actively working with Sales to provide detailed pricing estimates for potential new business opportunities. Design and validate custom developmental and production tooling necessary for producing conforming product.

  • Work closely with customers and the internal sales team on issues relating to existing production parts or new product opportunities. Includes producing qualification documentation for new products (i.e. PFD, CP, PFMEA, etc).

  • Perform R&D activities including DOE's for identifying limits and capabilities of laser equipment and detail findings in technical reports

  • Applies LEAN/Manufacturing Excellence principles to drive process improvements across various departments and supports ongoing Kaizen/Process improvement projects.

  • Develops capital equipment justifications for new machines or processes technologies that will support site goals of increasing quality, cost, and/or cycle time.

  • Manages capital equipment projects including budgetary responsibilities, equipment validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), and effective transfer to production.

  • Comprehension of Quality Policy and Quality Objectives. Knowledge of Quality Operating Procedures and functions of the Quality Management System pertaining to this position as determined by the Quality Manager. Commitment to comply with ISO related requirements.

  • Participates in local programmes and initiatives to sustain and improve EHS performance.

  • Supports production department investigations into Quality concerns, potentially including leading formal 4CP investigative team.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T call outs. Ability to identify and validate appropriate metrology tools and inspection techniques for determining product conformance following measurement system analysis (MSA) protocol. Able to analyze and interpret data using statistical process capability tools (Cpk, Ppk, etc).

  • May include limited travel requirements, less than 15% of time.

Are you the ideal candidate?

  • Bachelors in Engineering preferred.

  • Working knowledge in progressive management technologies such as Lean Manufacturing, JIT, MRP, and ERP

  • Experience operating and programming complex parts on 4+ axis laser CNC machines and galvo heads

  • In depth knowledge of laser physics relating to manufacturing

  • Proficient in CAD/CAM (Solidworks, Cagila, & Esprit preferred)

  • Applicants must possess strong communication skills at all levels and across all disciplines including strong customer focus and good customer relations.

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematics or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

  • Must possess a personal commitment ot safety and foster a culture of safety across the site

  • Must have strong organizational and time management skills in order to handle several assignments of varying urgency at one time

Job Location: San Diego, CA Position Summary: The Laser Engineer II at Daylight will be part of a cross-functional team that develops, tests, and specifies new semiconductor laser gain chips for tunable lasers, and transitions chips from R&D into prototypes, new products, and production. The Laser Engineer II will be responsible for planning, execution, and reporting on gain chip electro-optical characterization and Qualification testing in external cavity lasers. Product mix requires being detail-oriented while maintaining progress on multiple projects. The Laser Engineer II will use a combination of test expertise and familiarity of laser principles to support the full suite of test and development activities required for each project, program and product. The Laser Engineer II will be an individual contributor responsible for data accuracy by monitoring test results, maintaining test equipment, and expanding test capabilities. Data analysis and reduction will be used to support Mfg and Sales and Marketing enquiries. Failure analysis and reporting are required to support Mfg and Engineering.
