Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Landscaper in the
Facility Services Department. In general, the work of the Landscaper includes responsibility for the general upkeep and care of Durham Technical Community College's grounds and campus areas surrounding all of the buildings on the main campus (including the Lawson and Cooper streets), Orange County Campus, and the Northern Durham Center campus.
- Manage all Landscaping contracts, including but not limited to; Pre-bid, bidding, execution of contracts and inspection of work.
- Manage the daily operations of Durham Tech Landscaping.
- Follow and complete work assignments as given by your direct report.
- Be regular in attendance and willing to cooperate with other employees to complete duties and assignments.
- Ensure all Durham Tech landscaping needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Apply pesticide applicators using pesticide to maintain ornamentals, shade trees and turf. This includes commercial pesticide application work on lawns, public grounds, parks, shade trees, etc.
- Actively attend assigned work tickets and update them in a timely manner.
- Design, purchase product, and plant all annual beds throughout our main, Northern Durham, and Orange County campuses.
- PM and inspect all landscaping equipment as required by Facility Services Preventive Maintenance program. Notify the Assistant Director of any equipment repairs needed.
- Ensure the main campus is up to standards by checking the grounds furniture are in correct locations and that the campus is free of litter each day by making daily morning and afternoon litter pickups.
- Ability to prioritize assigned tickets, and upon completion close all work orders in the Work Order System.
- Develop and implement an effective turf management program for all turf areas, including mowing grass, trimming shrubs, edges, walkways, and curbs; fertilizing; soil testing; treating for pre/post emergent weed control, insect and disease control, and irrigation turf areas in dry conditions.
- Develop and implement an effective program to provide complete care of all trees, plants and shrubs, including pruning, insect control, soil testing, fertilizing and liming, mulching, edging, and manual weeding.
- Responsible for tree, plant, and shrub removal and replacement due to storm, disease, or insect damage.
- Develop and implement a renovation and maintenance plan and schedule for existing landscape areas as well as select and install plantings as needed in existing and new areas to be landscaped.
- Inspect the college grounds and campus areas surrounding all buildings on the Northern Durham Center and Orange County Campus on a weekly basis and report all findings to the supervisor.
- Maintain and monitor parts and supply inventories and provide purchase requests to the supervisor as needed.
- Ensure ConEx box storeroom and vehicles associated with the grounds keeping and landscape equipment are maintained in a clean and orderly manner.
- Oversee and directly attend to public walkways, which include but not limited to, power washing, snow removal activities and spread salt or deicer on public walkways to prevent ice build-ups.
- Be willing and readily cooperative, if reassigned from routine work assignments as needed, to assist in temporary and emergency situations.
- Show initiative in the job to ensure a continuous, timely, and efficient operation, using good judgement without constant or direct supervision, and being alert for new ideas and improvements.
- Wear uniforms as furnished by Durham Tech during normal working hours and be neat in appearance.
- Use and maintain all communication equipment as furnished by Durham Tech in compliance with all FCC regulations and as required by the Facility Services Department.
- Attend local landscaping conferences and seminars in order to remain up to date on the latest landscaping designs and trends.
- Must complete all mandatory work related and professional development training.
- Additional duties shall include other appropriate duties as assigned by the Director of Facility Services, Chief Division Officer, and/or the college President.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an Ornamental & Turf Pest Control "L" Certification.
- Have a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Work Experience:
10-years' experience in horticulture, landscaping, or another grounds-related field.
- Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and effective oral and written communication/public relation skills.
- Have grounds maintenance experience in a heavily landscaped setting requiring turf care.
- Able to schedule seasonal pesticide deterrence and treat areas of concern.
- Able to drive a tractor and use heavy equipment and machinery.
- Have repair and preventive maintenance experience on all landscape and grounds-related equipment.
- Have experience in budget preparation and execution.
- Punctual and accountable with a positive attitude.
- Initiative, drive and ability to think creatively and put ideas into action to improve grounds.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Competent computer skills that include Microsoft Office products and a work order system.
- Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Understanding of the mission, goals, and objectives of a community college.
- Ability to work with hand tools and all landscape and grounds-related equipment.
- Ability to participate in safety training and to comprehend and practice the training in the course of carrying out work duties.
- Be a reliable, responsible, tactful, resourceful, and trustworthy person with a sincere interest and concerned attitude toward the college.

Normal Working Hours:
A minimum of a 40-hour work week as determined with the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours. Summer schedules may vary to enable four-day or four-and-one-half-day work weeks.
