Purpose

Provide supervision and direction of an organic landscape program while adhering to the SITES certification standards for the Dell Medical School and future Medical District.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises a crew of 5 to 7 people in the implementation of a landscape management program to successfully uphold the SITES Gold landscape rating.

  • Assures landscape is maintained to University standards and adheres to SITES certification including all turf, shrub, and hardscapes. Reports unsafe conditions in all landscape areas, such as trip hazards, lighting, broken limbs, water breaks, and any other conditions that might be a safety hazard to the University community. Operating University-owned vehicles will be required.

  • Develops organic fertilizer and pesticide programs and directs the crew in proper application.

  • Assures the landscape (plants, turf, trees, and shrubs) is efficiently irrigated to maintain health, and abides by water restrictions by the city of Austin and the SITES certification. Directs crews to perform inspections on irrigation systems and reports needed repairs to the irrigation supervisor.

  • Safely operates landscaping equipment and vehicles.

  • Monitors the work order management system for requests and completes and approves daily labor report and time reports in electronic format.

  • Works with University project managers, consultants, and private contractors in a collaborative effort to design, develop, and install DMS landscape projects in compliance with landscape master plans and relevant certifications.

  • Composes professionally formatted official correspondences to ensure clarity of need and intent.

  • Other related functions to be assigned, including working with other departments within the FS portfolio and peer institutions throughout The University of Texas System, with occasional overtime required, to support.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or related field or equivalent years of experience in a related field. Five years of experience in landscape maintenance with four years of landscape supervisory experience. One year minimum experience and demonstrated knowledge with managing native and natural landscapes, managing invasive plant species, and implementing organic practices for land care. Experience in Microsoft Word and Excel. Demonstrate ability to effectively work in a team environment, as well as independently. Ability to communicate effectively with University staff and contacts. Professional representation of The University of Texas is expected at all times. Demonstrate stable work history and work ethic. Class C driver's license is required and an acceptable driving record. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. Must currently have or be able to obtain a Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's License within 6 months. Job offer contingent upon applicant clearing a background check and receiving an acceptable driver's rating. Applications will be reviewed online.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in Horticulture or related field. More than five years of experience in landscape maintenance. Five or more years of supervisory experience. Accreditation from an organic land care or horticulture program. Accreditation from a native plant training program. Experience reviewing landscape design, and construction plans, and specifications. Experience working with project managers and contractors on landscape construction projects. Field experience working with landscape maintenance in riparian ecosystems.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$55,731.00 + depending on qualifications
