Position Summary

This position is the lead on the Landscape Pesticide Crew and is responsible for pesticide applications on campus turf and landscape areas. This position is a manual labor position that will work along with the crew on pesticide applications. This position might be asked to lead crews during the direct supervisor's absence. Routinely assigns work to employees, assesses pesticide needs for areas of campus, prioritizes work and ensures that employees under their supervision are making applications correctly and efficiently. This position is responsible for keeping accurate pesticide application records and pesticide inventory. This position is responsible for training personnel on the crew and monitoring their work throughout the day. This position will ensure the safety of the individuals under their supervision as well as the safety of the campus community in and around the work site. This position will ensure that all employees are utilizing safe working procedures and that they are provided with and utilizing the correct Personal Protective Equipment at all times. This position may assist maintenance and horticulture crews to help get needed work accomplished when deemed necessary. May work in any aspect of grounds related work as deemed necessary to reach departmental goals.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Georgia Commercial Pesticide Applicators License - Category 24

  • Pesticide application experience on landscapes and turfgrass

  • Plant and turfgrass knowledge

  • Plant and turfgrass disease/ insect knowledge

  • Preferred experience in grounds maintenance

  • Ability to operate all types of grounds maintenance and landscaping equipment to include mowers, tractors, trimmers, edgers, backpack blowers, and skid steers

  • Understand and follow specific oral and written instructions

Physical Demands

  • Constant physical labor 8 hours a day/5 days a week

  • Extensive/constant stooping, bending, squatting and working with your hands above your head

  • Lift up to 75 lbs. consistently throughout the workday.

  • Perform heavy labor often under adverse weather climatic conditions (cold, heat, rain, snow)

  • Driving to perform job related tasks

Directs, supervises, and works with crew on pesticide applications to campus turf and landscapes.

Percentage of time 65 Duties/Responsibilities

Actively monitors campus grounds for areas with pesticide application needs.

Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities

Trains crew members in proper pesticide application procedures, enforces safety procedures and requirements.

Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities

Pesticide application record keeping and inventory.

Responds to campus emergencies including inclement weather events.
