Requirements

The Landscape Gardener I performs journey level skilled work in support of the Grounds/Landscape area for the purpose of enhancing overall campus beautification and maintaining a safe, functional, clean, efficient and attractive living and learning environment. The incumbent performs grounds maintenance, snow and ice removal, campus cleanup, landscape installation, landscape maintenance, and operates grounds equipment in order to promote campus safety, aesthetics, and functionality. Reporting directly to the Grounds/Landscape Supervisor along with other technician I positions, the Landscape Gardner I has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Performs all grounds maintenance, landscape maintenance and various grounds related tasks.

  • Performs all tasks related to installation of landscape materials.

  • Ensures that assigned area is clean.

  • Removes trash and recyclable materials from the campus grounds and landscape areas, and removes postings, graffiti, and chalk from campus public spaces.

  • Safely operates all grounds equipment including mowers, edgers, and all-terrain vehicles.

  • Monitors equipment maintenance needs to ensure proper performance.

  • Operates irrigation systems, identifies irrigation problems, and makes designated repairs.

  • Performs snow and ice removal of campus staircases and walkways.

  • Assists in the application of pesticides on campus plantings as needed.

  • Maintains pesticide application requirements through in-house and off-site pesticide training.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • 1-3 years of grounds and landscape maintenance experience

  • Valid driver's license

  • Ability to operate pickup trucks, tractors, skid steer loaders, all-terrain vehicles and other specialized grounds equipment

Requirements The Landscape Laborer performs landscape labor work by assisting to prepare and maintain landscaped areas as part of the services provided by the Facilities Management department to maintain university buildings and grounds. S/he is part of a landscape maintenance team that receives training and experience vital to the maintenance of exterior space on the campus, generally referred to as landscape maintenance. The incumbent uses all standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade and observes all safety rules, regulations and precautions in performing their duties. Reporting directly to the Landscape and Grounds Supervisor along with eight other laborers Gardener II and Gardener positions, the Landscape Laborer has additional duties that include but are not limited to: * Performs landscape labor work to ensure a pleasant appearance of the grounds as well as semi-skilled tasks associated with laying out and preparing areas for planting. * Maintains planted areas, lawns, athletic fields, trees and shrubs, and walkways as assigned or scheduled. * Works with crews responding to requests for service by performing cleanup, snow removal, and similar activities. * Suggests improvements in the work to improve unit operations. * Provides supervisors with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools, and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service. * Ensures efficient and economic use of supplies and materials to conserve university resources. * Draws and/or requisitions supplies, parts, materials and tools needed and uses such items economically to avoid undue costs. * Informs supervisor of supply/material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained.
