WHAT WE DO
The Utilities Department is responsible for providing water, sewer, refuse collection, and disposal services to Santa Maria. The Mission Statement of the Utilities Department is to provide efficient utility services through the use of progressive innovation, excellent customer service, and the wise use of public resources for the long-term benefit of the community.
IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT
The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced heavy equipment operator with a Class B license. Priority will be given to those with landfill-specific experience or construction-specific experience utilizing heavy equipment provided they have the proper license required for this position.
Important:
A condition of employment is possession of Class "B" Driver's License. See Qualifications/Experience section for specific information. In addition, under the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Program, this position will require a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and submit to random drug and/or alcohol testing throughout employment with the City.
DUTIES
THE POSITION
Under general direction of assigned supervisor, drives, and operates heavy equipment used in the operation of the sanitary landfill and maintains travel ways and ditches. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this classification but may act as lead worker for temporarily assigned employees or special projects.
The Landfill Heavy Equipment Operator position is an Individual Contributor role that works as a team member to effectively operate the landfill. Their role enables the city to provide the community's most essential and basic refuse service in the most efficient, cost-effective, and courteous manner possible.
DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION
Landfill Heavy Equipment Operator
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ideally, four years of experience operating heavy construction equipment such as D-8 Caterpillar dozer, scraper, water truck, motor grader, and landfill compactor
Graduation from high school.
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as:
Operation and daily preventive maintenance inspection of heavy equipment, i.e. D-8 Caterpillar, carry-all scraper, 4,000-gallon water truck, motor grader and landfill compactor.
Safety procedures in operating heavy equipment.
Sanitary Landfill operations requirements, as defined by the State.
Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent).
Effective use of computer and other office equipment.
Required licenses and/or certifications associated with the assignment:
May be required to obtain immunizations for Hepatitis A and B.

SELECTION PROCESS

Application, including cover letter will be evaluated and scored. Candidate's final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by their complete application packet upon meeting the employment standards of the position.
Departmental selection interviews with the hiring department will be scheduled once the Eligibility List has been established. As part of the departmental selection interview process, candidates invited to interview will also participate in a heavy equipment skills test.
