Job Description

The Operator Heavy Equipment is responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment at a recycling facility, landfill or transfer station for the purpose of transferring, spreading, covering, loading and/or compacting waste or soil in an efficient and safe manner.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED

  • Two years' prior related experience in heavy equipment operation.

  • One year of prior experience working at sites regulated by OSHA.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Perform pre- and post-operation inspection of the equipment in accordance with Company policy to ensure windows, lights, mirrors and rear view camera are clean. Safely and efficiently operate equipment that may include: forklift, excavator, bulldozer, front-end loader and other equipment using proper safety standards.

  • Continuously monitor waste for evidence of unacceptable waste in materials.

  • Continuously monitor the condition of the equipment to ensure it is operationally ready at all times to minimize down time; clean tracks or wheels on equipment, as needed.

  • Perform and document minor service on equipment, referring more complicated mechanical issues to Maintenance Shop for repair.

  • Complete Equipment Condition Report and other reports, as necessary; report any necessary repairs to supervisor, as needed.

  • Follow all required safety policies and procedures.

  • Ensure that shop is clean, serviced and stored at the completion of each shift.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Prepare equipment for delivery. Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions and failures of machine and engines systems, and their components. Work in adverse weather conditions as needed. Accept all out of town assignments requiring extended overnight stays. Communicate orally and in writing information, instructions and explanations to associates, customers and management regarding equipment conditions, problems and recommendations. Ideal candidate will have 3-5 years' experience troubleshooting and repairing construction and agriculture equipment. Essential Functions: * Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and failures. * Maintain good customer relations and support for corporate marketing objectives. * Repair, recondition, and maintain equipment and components. * Prepare service reports. * Plan and control cost of repair jobs. * Maintain company equipment – keep in good clean orderly condition. * Work safely at all times. Adhere to all applicable safety policies. Comply with all company policies, procedures and standards. * Own and maintain required personal tools. * Learn and use Empire, Caterpillar and allied product procedures and systems. * Perform other related duties as assigned. * Maintain current MSHA card if work area requires. * Provide on-the-job training to technicians and helpers as assigned. * Work overtime as needed. * Travel to remote locations as needed. * Make warranty recommendations. * Communicate with proper individuals to clarify instructions or discuss scope or progress of job. * Must accomplish training and serve as a Green Belt in support of EMPIRE's Six Sigma program. * Work within and promote corporate values.
