VDOT's Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Land Use Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Land Use Engineer vacancy. This position provides technical review of land development plans consistent with VDOT specifications, standards, policies, and procedures. The selected candidate will work with local government officials, developers, consultants, and VDOT staff to evaluate the soundness of designs and the impacts of land development projects on the state-maintained roadways.

Required skills for job & position:

  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include MS Office, project management and engineering software programs

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with competing deadlines and limited resources

  • Knowledge of VDOT subdivision street requirements, entrance standards and road design standards

  • Ability to interpret technical data and prepare and maintain detailed reports

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

  • Knowledge of roadway geometric design and other engineering principles

  • Knowledge of VDOT land use permit policies, construction practices, materials requirements, and street acceptance procedures

  • Ability to apply engineering principles and practices

  • Ability to enforce and demonstrate safety behaviors, as well as advocate and practice safety in everyday work activities

  • Skill and ability to positively interact with employees, citizens, and government officials

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret subdivision, site, and construction plans, as well as local ordinances and zoning requirements

  • Ability to read and understand highway construction plans

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse groups

  • Ability to provide detailed reports on review findings

  • Knowledge of VDOT, state, and federal policies and procedures relating to transportation engineering

  • Ability to negotiate outcomes and work with diverse customer groups

  • Knowledge engineering specifications and standards

  • Knowledge of project management procedures and principles

  • Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external customers

  • Ability to draw rational conclusions and develop solutions from analysis; make independent decisions; and manage multiple assignments

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license

  • Experience applying subdivision street requirements, entrance standards and road design standards

  • Experience applying roadway geometric design and other engineering principles

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences

  • Ability to interact successfully with internal and external customers

  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret construction plans, local ordinances, and zoning requirements

  • Experience applying land use permit policies, construction practices, materials requirements, and street acceptance procedures

Additional Considerations

  • PE license or EIT certification

  • Experience in land development plan review

  • A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired

  • Experience in the application of engineering principles to highway construction projects

  • Experience in stormwater, drainage, erosion and sediment control design, or plan review

  • Experience in traffic engineering

This position is classified as designated to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
