POSITION SUMMARY: Provides education to Family BirthPlace patients in all aspects of maternal and infant care supporting departmental and divisional nursing philosophy and objectives, as well as, Health System initiatives.# Coordinates family involvement in the education process and serves as a resource person regarding breastfeeding for staff, physicians, students, patients and families.# Represents the hospital within the community at a variety of meetings and activities.# EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Bachelor#s Degree in Nursing required.# Experience in patient education required. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Current Registered Nurse licensure from the Illinois Department of Professional Registration.
Certification in lactation education preferred or must obtain within 18 months of assuming the position.# Bi-annual BLS certification required EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively deal with all levels within the organization and community.# Strong verbal and written communication, organizational and critical decision making skills.# Successful completion of annual clinical, age specific and job specific competencies and skills validation tools.
In collaboration with all health care team members, develops, plans, implements and evaluates individualized education and support for breastfeeding mothers and their families, staff and the community, incorporating current research findings into clinical practice.# Documents consultations and education on patient progress notes per established policies.# Provides necessary follow-up with patients.# Functions as a clinical expert, resource and consultant for staff.# Develops, evaluates and conducts breastfeeding education programs and annual competencies. Assists in the development, planning and implementation of a variety of community classes and programs, providing clinical expertise for breastfeeding services.
Develops, updates and maintains an adequate supply of appropriate patient teaching materials.
