This part-time position requires 9-hour shifts on weekends and holidays, with occasional weekday shifts as needed.

THE PARKS & LANDSCAPE SERVICES DIVISION

The Parks & Landscape Services Division manages and provides maintenance services for City Parks and Facilities. Operating under the Parks & Community Services Department, we are committed to providing maintenance and operations to:

  • Parks

  • Trails

  • Golf Course

  • Sports Fields

  • Senior Center

  • Skate Parks

  • Equestrian Center

  • Community Centers

THE POSITION

Under close supervision of the Lead Parks Maintenance Worker, this position will perform routine grounds maintenance duties; and perform related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Laborers assist skilled maintenance staff in maintenance projects. Under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the area of parks maintenance and related tasks as assigned.

ABOUT THE PARKS & COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT

Develop, build and maintain parks, trails and recreational facilities in a safe and aesthetically pleasing manner; maintain recreational open space; provide a wide range of programs for the community including athletic leagues, classes, child care and development, and senior activities; library services and literacy programs; schedule use of facilities; plan, organize and promote community events; and enforce park rules and regulations and promote safe use of park facilities.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance duties.

  • Clean and service park areas and restrooms.

  • Prepare athletic fields for recreation programs.

  • Operate small power tools and equipment.

  • Pick up litter; empty trash receptacles and BBQ's.

  • Closeand lock restrooms and parking lot gates.

  • Maintain records.

  • Perform facility set-up for various recreation activities.

  • Cleans up work sites upon completion of job.

  • Provide quality customer service.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Performs special assignments as assigned.

  • May perform duties normally performed by a Parks Maintenance Worker in a training capacity.

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of maintenance and repair of park grounds.

  • Chemicals for cleaning restrooms.

  • Vehicle operations and state and local traffic laws.

Ability to:

  • Work weekends and holidays.

  • Operate landscape maintenance equipment.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in a timely manner.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Maintain a courteous attitude when dealing with the public.

  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Bend, stoop, climb, and lift 50 pounds.

  • Provide quality customer service.

Education, Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent; prior experience in landscaping or landscape maintenance work is preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy. A commercial driver's license is preferred.
