Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

This position will be based in the Necropsy Laboratory of the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The main responsibilities will include assisting pathologists in conducting necropsy examinations on a variety of animal species, maintaining the Necropsy Laboratory, and processing (trimming) formalin-fixed animal tissues for histologic examinations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.

Computer skills (including working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel) and experience with digital photography.

Ability to accurately enter numerical data into the laboratory information system.

Physical Demands

Lift up to 50 pounds.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Receive and login animal carcasses submitted for necropsy.

Assist pathologists, residents, and veterinary students during necropsy, process and dispose of animal tissues and remains.

Prepare reagents and order laboratory supplies.

Clean and maintain the necropsy facilities.

Write necropsy standard operating procedures as needed.

Percentage of time 60 Duties/Responsibilities

Organize and trim formalin-fixed tissues for further histologic processing.

Data entry into laboratory information system and distribution of biopsy cases to pathologists.

Perform formalin recycling and periodically dispose of tissues.

Percentage of time 30 Duties/Responsibilities

Daily pickup of packages from Campus mail

Perform weekend/holiday necropsy duties as assigned.

Other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Section head.
