To collect, process, and analyze soil, plant, water, and air samples, to set up and maintain laboratory and field experiments in support of research directed at understanding the vulnerability of soil organic carbon to global change.

Ability to work alone or in teams outside under adverse conditions.
Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
Good organizational and time management skills.
Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such chemicals.
Knowledge of computers and software applications.
Knowledge of standard computer software packages for data analysis and graphical presentations (R preferred), and on-line literature search engines.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience conducting research outside in the field.
Experience working in a laboratory beyond lab sections of college classes.
Experience working with chemistry protocols for environmental analyses (includes preparing reagents, pipetting, filtering, etc.).
Previous experience working with soils not necessary but preferred.

Key Accountabilities
Description
Field Work
Organizes field trips.
Collects air, soil, water, and plant samples from various terrestrial ecosystems following established protocols.
Conducts soil and ecosystem respiration measurements using an infrared gas analyzer, oxygen probe, and cavity ring down spectrometer.
Installs and maintains field equipment including sensors and dataloggers for continuous recording of environmental variables.
Maintains an up-to-date field book recording all data collected and field activities performed.
Helps establish field experiments in agricultural and forest soils.
Percentage Of Time 30% Description
Analysis
Sets up and performs soil extractions and fractionations using established protocols under the general guidance of the Principal Investigator.
Performs analyses of carbon, metals, and nutrients in soils, plants, and extracts and of carbon and oxygen in air samples using established protocols.
Maintains isotopic plant labelling chamber in the greenhouse.
Collaborates with the Principal Investigator in investigating and developing modifications to protocols/techniques, and documents all new techniques developed in the laboratory.

Records
Writes field and laboratory protocols.
Collects and analyzes data resulting from experimentation/analyses.
Summarizes results, makes graphs, and prepares progress reports for oral presentation at laboratory meetings.
Conducts literature searches to assist in establishing new laboratory techniques and meta-analyses.

Laboratory
Accomplishes day-to-day care and housekeeping of laboratory.
Oversees day-to-day work of undergraduates under the guidance of Principal Investigator.
Assesses the need for and orders all supplies and reagents needed for analyses and experiments.
Assists in the maintenance of laboratory equipment and safety records, and in the preparation of routine reagents.
Monitors laboratory equipment and instrument performance; troubleshoots, obtains maintenance and repair as necessary.
Maintains computerized records associated with laboratory activities.
Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as required.
Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
Adheres to laboratory protocols for handling foreign soils and preventing isotopic contamination.
